  • Right, so the zip tie that was holding the rear brake cable down to the bottom of the BB shell snapped, letting the compressionless housing contact the axle of the chainset, which has, over time, sliced my chainset in two. Finally snapped on the hill outside Denmark Hill station this morning. Crikey!!

  • What brand of outer brake cable were you using? if it cut through your axle without you losing any brake performance, that is fucking impressive

  • if it cut through your axle without you losing any brake performance, that is fucking impressive

    Steel vs. aluminium

  • Jagwire compressionless. Still working perfectly!

    Might go hydro.

  • Any interest in acquiring this as a rolling chassis? All working, bar new chainset and BB needed.

  • Pic of the chaos. I think I’m going to give up on this frame - too expensive to maintain and fix with the myriad of Cannondale standards. Any ideas for a frame set I could replace everything over to - disc brake, ideally external routing but not imperative, threaded bb, full carbon fork, not outrageously expensive? Have been looking at Dolomite framesets. Additionally, will probably have a 50/34 spider ring for sale once I get it out the frame - and a CAAD 10 disc frameset eventually. Don’t want to go hydro - too expensive, can’t install it myself, too much faff.

  • Also shout out to P&L cycles - you guys were right, I should have kept a closer eye on the zip tie cinching down the brake cable through the BB!

  • I have a slightly used 109mm axle you can have for cheaps if interested.

Bought a chainset on here couple of months ago with a used axle, replaced it with a new one so have the used one spare.

  • Hmm, perhaps more salvageable that I first thought. Is that the right length for a CAAD 10 to your knowledge? BB30 a mystery to me. Could Ditch the compressionless cable to the rear disc and run a Dura Ace housing instead as I believe @PhilDAS has on his CAAD.

  • Damn, the cable went right through the axle?
Yeah still using the DA cables on mine though I don't ride it much. Feel like I need to go and check that the cable isn't rubbing my crank axle now. At least its replaceable on SI cranks. Think my red cranks would be for the bin if they wore through.

  • I think the 109mm is the right length for the caad12 which is bb30a. You can fit it to yours no problem though, you just need the right size spacer iirc

  • It's actually the axle from the chainset I bought off PhilDAS. Might have some extra spacers too. Let me know if interested, I can have a look what I have and take some pictures.

And I use the 109mm axle spindle on my Caad 10 with spacers on both sides and works a treat.

  • Definitely interested ! Drop me a DM. Might aggressively salvage this rather than giving in.

  • Yep. Jagwire compressionless vs aluminium axle - only one clear winner. Pile of metal shavings fell out the side of the bb after.

  • So to get this show back on the road I think I would need:

    BB30 tool - £31.90
Crank puller - £12.90 (is this the right one?)
Brake cable outer - Dura Ace - £3/m
Chainset axle - 39.99 new or second hand from @LeMesjeu (this one)

Do I need a tool to remove the crank arms from the snapped axle? Am I missing anything?

  • Apart from a new zip tie obviously. Maybe even two this time.

  • You need this crank puller instead of the park tool one.
Save yourself the bb30 tool if you don't need new bearings.

  • Cheers. Need the BB30 tool as when the axle snapped the drive side pulled the BB cup out slightly, so it needs pressing back in. Wouldn’t be surprised if I needed new bearings to be honest.

  • Anyone using the Rotor 24mm adapter on a CAAD with Shimano cranks? Apparently it ‘sheathes’ the axle, eliminating any rub.

  • Shimano chainset might also help sort the awful chain line the spiderring gave the bike.

  • I had one on my caad10 before getting a sisl crankset. It has been faultless however i haven't used it for a long time.

  • Using standard Shimano Hollowtech chainset?

  • Yes, a dura ace 7800 and an ultegra 6700 but both with a narrow wide chainring so couldn't comment on the chain line.

  • I've had a stock Ultegra Crankset in with the Wheels MFG BB30-BSA adapter with 0 issues (touch wood). Was going to suggest this but thought it might be too much $$$

  • What’s clearance like for the rear brake cable / hose through the bb with the WMFG bb?
