  • I didn’t get the costume when I saw the photo at first either but neither did I think ‘blackface’ when I saw it.

I guess it’s subjective and when taken in context with the other photos it was posted with, it doesnt look good.

That there was still cries of ‘racism’ after it was explained that the guy was dressed up as a white bloke isn’t a good look either though. In my opinion.

  • If we want to get really deep then Rasicm being a systemic issue of socioeconomic and geopolitical oppression, dressing up as the classic white saviour who exploits the locals by buying their products at low prices is probably not a good thing.

    Just saying.

Now of course Del Monte don't make their buying transparent but given that they are a multi billion dollar business, and were taken to court in the US for paying below the minimum wage for tuna canners, then they are not exactly going to be paying top price for their fruit.

  • And vampire costumes glorify the legacy of a genocidal leader who reputedly nailed the turbans to the heads of Turkish messengers who would not remove them willingly.

And witch outfits perpetuate the stereotyping and villification that led to the execution of hundreds of thousands of women.

And don’t get me started on the white normalisation behind ghost costumes.
