• Bontrager Mud X or Specialized Storm Control will grip on basically every surface and be pretty fast even in the dry. You don't need massive volume for trail riding, and the bigger you go, the more extreme your tyres need to be to provide the grip you're after, and the more arduous they become to pedal anywhere.

    Sure, but all that means is your tyres do uncomfortable squirmy things unless you go for stupid wide rims and/or heavy casings.

    Fwiw I've ridden 2.0" tubeless tyres close to 20 psi and not died. I've also had aggressive 2.4s that were difficult IRT finding the right pressure and not nearly as grippy as I would like, considering how much of a chore they made everything feel.
