  • you don't want to ride in that shit anyway because it fucks your bike

    No, it fucks your bike.

  • Do you have the necessary shims for running these on 26"?

  • Bontrager Mud X or Specialized Storm Control will grip on basically every surface and be pretty fast even in the dry. You don't need massive volume for trail riding, and the bigger you go, the more extreme your tyres need to be to provide the grip you're after, and the more arduous they become to pedal anywhere.

    ATMO

  • I'm sure the Dirty Dan is good too, but I'm allergic to Schwalbe. Same concept tho

  • I have some wirecutters and gorilla tape.

  • the bigger you go, the more extreme your tyres need to be to provide the grip you're after

In the wet, maybe. Opposite in the dry IMO.

  • I've got gorilla glue and a pressure washer. We're set!

  • Doesn't the massive volume allow me to drop to 20 psi on tubeless though?

@Howard that sounds like exactly the sort of thing I'm after, thanks

  • I find larger volume tyres are good for confidence, yah. Also a bit of insurance against skill deficit.

I don't mind the extra drag, just makes you stronger. I'm not racing anyway when I'm trail riding.

  • skill deficit.

You called? It's why I've got 3.0 tyres. Don't ride much wen it's muddy tho.

  • I don't mind the extra drag, just makes you stronger. I'm not racing anyway when I'm trail riding.

Yes, right on. I'm more worried about traction than speed for Strathpuffer. Aside from that I don't ever race so I don't care if I'm slow the rest of the time either, my friends can just wait for me.

Now do I wait and try to find the tyres cheap or just buy them now and get some "training" (lol) done on them? £74 the pair on bike-discount :'(

  • Can’t find a Vicky Pollard meme

  • It's California-dry twice a year in the UK. Even then I've had few issues with the mud tyres, and witnessed some very sketchy moments with tred-light plus tyres

  • Doesn't the massive volume allow me to drop to 20 psi on tubeless though?

Sure, but all that means is your tyres do uncomfortable squirmy things unless you go for stupid wide rims and/or heavy casings.

Fwiw I've ridden 2.0" tubeless tyres close to 20 psi and not died. I've also had aggressive 2.4s that were difficult IRT finding the right pressure and not nearly as grippy as I would like, considering how much of a chore they made everything feel.

  • Wide, stiff-carcass tyres definitely have their place, I just think that place is gravity-oriented

  • You have those mud things front and back?

  • I have 2x Maxxis High Roller 29x2.4s
    Medium use.
    You interested? Can post

  • Ya. Only on 26" bikes, but I'm sure they only improve on 29ers.

  • Having just got home and having a peek, I don't think I've got the clearance for 2.4" with mud and snow in the mix! Rear derailleur cable routing is especially stupid. New frame time? ...

  • Who needs Di2 when mud can shift for you...

I've come off the xking and now on nobbly nics - tanwall, naturally - immediately more confidence inspiring and I'm either getting fitter or have noticed very little difference in terms of average speed/rolling resistance on the road.

  • witnessed some very sketchy moments with tred-light plus tyres

Tbf, @7Üp is like that whatever tyre he uses.

  • How many pennies for the grifters fella?

  • Cool. Never ever ride this bike on the road so no worries there :)
