Do it. Become the style icon you were always meant to be...

I would def want to know a lot more about the watch before splashing pretty strong ££££..
From the pic it looks like the dial is blistering, and the lume is gone from several of the plots.
Does it have an Extract? Who has serviced it etc..Am assuming its a blue dial, although it looks quite dark...

It's the D3 dial - the darkest blue that they did. That matches up to the hands and the bezel, all of which are Mark 1 parts. It's just been serviced by Omega, who replaced the bezel lock button and re-sealed it. The glass was replaced at the same time.
The dial has some bubbling - once water got in it could not get out, which caused this according to what I've read. The question is whether the service has arrested that or if it is going to continue - I have no idea there.
The Lume is worn on the bezel in a precise arc that matches a shirt or jacket sleeve - you can't see that as it's under my jacket.
What is an extract?

You'd be looking at a lot more than £5.5k for a 40yo ploprof with perfect dial.
But, as you say, always good to find out as much as you can before spending big money.

From what I can see online, average to good vintage Plops sell for £4.5k to £5.5k. Bricks and mortar always comes with a premium.

An extract from the Archive's of Omega.

I have asked for it. Movement, case, bezel, dial and hands are original - and it has the original Isofrane strap (blue rubber).

That Ploprof is a joke hideous.

Agreed

It's an acquired taste for sure.

Quite a departure from the Rolex OP, unless you’re buying both... I want to like the PloProf, it’s unique and serious but just look at it.
The US seller of my speedy got in touch to say he has the extract which was nice, turns out it was originally sold in the UK which is weirdly satisfying.

I quite like how ugly the Ploprof case is - zero fucks were given in the task of beating Rolex/meeting the COMEX requirements. It has a story, and I like that.

I can't disagree that the Ploprof is fugly but it is an important watch, and very attractive to somebody that collects dive watches.
Also, it's not a moonwatch or a sub. Which is worth something, surely.

Personally I love them, but have never bought one, as i know it would just end up in the safe.. Also having skinny wrists doesn't help..
If as you say, they are the original dial and hands etc, that would be very unusual, as they were always swapped out if the watch went back to Omega for service. The lume colour also seems to vary quite a lot between each hand, and the dial.. DYOR always

If/when you buy it, first shot must be it worn in a paddling pool.
Will accept bathtub.

Hmm, now this is my problem with older watches- I have literally no idea how to go forwards with research on this. The shop say these things are all original, but I can see the differences you mention. How to prove what is correct?

I don’t get the dislike for ploprof. It’s just pure functional/industrial brilliance.
It’s the same appeal with g-shock (that I sincerely loathe though) and tuna can seikos etc. just a different price/quality/brand bracket.

=buy the 1948 Seamaster instead.

I’m glad you like the story because you’re gonna be repeating it to a lot of people who ask...!
Totally get the history and if I were a dive watch guy that would be a great one for the collection (and investment, I think it’s a good buy) but for me I just wouldn’t wear it over other watches. -

I really know nothing about assessing vintage watches so my general approach is to make sure that everything looks similarly and appropriately tatty...
Not fool proof by any means and not a substitute for proper knowledge but it's a good start.
For me, that dial and those hands look spot on.

On the topic of large dive watches...
Any interest in an SRP779J1 Pepsi-bezel Turtle before it goes on the ‘bay? Great watch, just a little large for my tastes these days.
4R36 hacking/hand-winding automatic movement. Keeps good time - I haven’t measured it but it’s certainly within a few seconds a day.
Comes with the original, unused Seiko rubber strap that this model is supplied with. Also comes with an OEM Seiko SRP Turtle bracelet. This bezel colour was never available on the bracelet, I had to buy it separately. So it’s the right bracelet for this watch, just not originally supplied with this bezel colour, if you follow.
Also comes with instructions, tag, Seiko box and 2 extra bracelet links (pins/collars unfortunately missing). It’s sized to my 7.25” wrist, and has about another 0.25” on the clasp that can be let out.
Light wear on the bracelet and case, small marks on the bezel and crystal. I’ve tried to show these in the photos, but they aren’t especially obvious.
£250

I think that rushing into buying a PP isn't the best option, there is a very small number of people that want to buy them, and they are not difficult to find.. So if you really want one, why not get one with a killer dial and case, original B & P, purchase receipts etc.. Would the price be much different from the one being offered to you?
Should have qualified my response. I am by no means an expert on Omega values. As you say that may well be a reasonable price for that watch, my (poorly made) point was that the case on that model in general is too roughly finished for my tastes.
