Merckx himself said he sometimes switched forks between frames from different builders for specific rides. A mismatch could be legit. :)
For a while, when Colnago first started his fancy pantographing you could get your own name on the stem. It was only about ten dollars....back when you could walk in and order at his shop.

Merckx frame built in Eddy's own factory. It has his EM logo on the seatstay caps.
Colnago frames from the Molteni era had scalloped head tube lugs with a club cutout.
