Someone must have really wanted a replica badly, that's a lot of work removing the shifter bosses and brake cable guides.

Merckx himself said he sometimes switched forks between frames from different builders for specific rides. A mismatch could be legit. :)
For a while, when Colnago first started his fancy pantographing you could get your own name on the stem. It was only about ten dollars....back when you could walk in and order at his shop.
