Some people do this with something called turkey vulture gearing, unfortunately the website's gone down. But in short 9-speed Deore with long cage should work. Maybe needs a road link thing (£1 on eBay)

I run 11 - 32 on deore long cage 10sp. If you get a longer b screw i think you can coerce 34T . I'm sure interwebby has something on this...

I’m building up 10spd Shimano downtube shifters with a 48/34 chainset. What rear derailleur options do I have if I want to run an 11-34t 10spd cassette? Can I use a Deore 9spd mech?
