I like that you're gonna use downtube shifters. Had em when I first built up my cross check, found I didn't change gear half as much as I do with brifters, obviously I didn't need to.

Sliders on my Orlo. Wouldnt worry about weight if youre gonna be using a steel fork and frame, only adds 100/200g or something. Mine easily clears 650b 2.0 but wouldnt wanna go wider bc clearance. Tbf anything you do on drops probably wont need wider than that
Also nothing wrong with DT shifters. If i ever feel the need for 2x on mine i'd just get a Dt mount brazed on and run a cable under the Bb

Exciting project! Will be nice to consolidate the cross-check onto something more tailored to what you want.
Dyno routing and extra bottle cages would be top of my list. -

Thanks, your bike is quite similar to what I'm aiming for actually. Looks ace.
Can I ask what your chainstay lngrh (centre to centre) is when you have the sliders set to accept 650b X 2.0? And how heavily shaped are your chainstays?

Theres not a particular length that works with 650b 2.0. In that pic theyre at their longest setting, 435 with 700x40c WTB nano. Mostly for mud clearance. When I mocked up the 650b wheel I could have moved them forward a bit but would only eat into the mud clearance.
Mines slightly different as I have a relatively slack 72.5 ST angle. Id recommend going steeper and using a layback post. Hasnt affected its use bit would be nicer having a little more mud clearance.
I'll try get a proper pic of the chainstays but heres a muddy DBAD shot

Alright Pantani

You caught me. Although I wonder what his reasoning was?

Not the only one. This totally random cyclist off the internet did too.

Those different hoods would drive me nuts.

Which is why Pantani still used a left ergo lever.
Apparently it’s just for weight on climbers bikes and also more accurate front shifting -

No negativity in this thread please.

Rep for thread policing ;)

Thank you, all good to know.
I have also been reminded that a salsa Vaya meets some of my criteria so will have a look at that geo too...

Update? Is it built yet?

Much work, little build.
The framebuilder is still waiting for me to give the nod on final spec and geometry. I've been so busy with work, for pretty much the last few months, that it's been on the back burner. It's not ideal. Luckily he's a patient sort

Other things have happened, to be fair.
I've bought some 650b tyres: wtb beeline (2.2"). The builder is happy that they'll fit in with a 430mm chainstay (which is within my adjustment range) plus some crimping/dimpling.
The beeline idea is from an inspiration bike - pic to follow.

Just sent the geometry and spec list to the builder. Things should be happening soon...
@mostly_by_bike has been badgering me to adopt a slack head tube angle and short stem, much like modern mtbs. I'm sceptical but also intrigued... Other gravel bikes haven't adopted the slack (around 68-69 degrees) as far as I can see. So: I've settled on a 71 degree headtube, EC44/ZS44 with probably a cane creek angleset which should allow a range from at 69.5 to 72.5. steep for front loading (low trail); middling for normal riding; slack for battering around single track.

Also, probably going for paragon rockers, 420-437 chain stay length range.

That is a gamechanger! Genius!

Just needs an EBB now, for altering effective seat angle & BB height ;-)

This'll get built soon - starting midweek.
I've also got a supernova light setup (E3 triple and E3 taillight 2); new wheels (SP dynamo and halo to WTB KOM i23) and am waiting on the arrival of g one allrounds in 650*2.25 size.
Brakes will be TRP spyre flat mount.
Fork will be straight legged with either biplane or segmented crown (builder's preference).

Is it happening? What happened to the Beeline plan?

Should have begun today! Much excitement.
I've still got the beelines. They were cheap. Will check them on when a bit more of a bite is needed...
Ok cool, I follow.
I've got sliders on my new mtb so will see how they fare.
The builder actually prefers paragon rockers but they are £££
