@Cupcakes cheers! You're new build is a much more sensible way of doing things and I can see myself going the same way down the line, but for now I want to keep tinkering with the surly. I think the end result will be some adaptation of the current drop outs - with adjustable disc mount positions. Looking forward to seeing how it comes out.
