Is the terrain particularly harsh? 200 miles a day with support sounds like a soft record.

Throwing your hat in the ring? Ha
-
• #2279
If it IS a soft record, hell yeah :)
-
• #2280
Any record is soft if you’re strong enough!
-
• #2281
I would say there are harder records.
His route looks like he won't see a hill of any size after Spain. And he should have the wind behind him. -
• #2282
For sure. But for those of us who aren't strong enough and rely on blagging our way through it makes sense to target the low hanging fruit.
-
• #2283
Indeed.
Or just set a new record!
-
• #2284
The record to beat is unsupported so it's a soft record. I'm guessing he's just set an arbitrary goal.

Well done Leigh, record broken. He rides with my local club, Cycle Mickleover and is an extremely pleasant chap who has inspired many at all levels to get pedalling. Sweet technique as you would expect, I've tried to watch and learn.

What was his daily mileage in the end?

Looks interesting might be a good back up option for me.
I’m hoping to get a spot on TCR looks like the application will open in November, how long is the application form and when does it need to be completed by usually? -
• #2289
Damn, I'm from Edinburgh and my parents still live there. Would have been much easier/cheaper than TAW!

• #2290
This. I might do this over taw this next year. Looks good!

"The Trans Alba Race is a self supported cycling ride around Scotland"
No it's not. Trans = across ffs
At least I learned what 'Alba' means now though so there's that. I'd assumed it was something in South America and ignored it until now.

One of the organisers did TABR this year. I don't recall meeting him though.

With the climbing I’ve kinda guessed the route and a huge chunk is uninspiring if I’m right.
Also getting a feeling a lot of these events are popping up purely for money making not the values i see in some of the “big” events

Starts same time as

1200: http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/19-585/I want to ride much more of Scotland but not so bothered about racing. Only really interested in the OG events. I'd even consider the Divide if I brushed up on some mtb skills.

Well there in for a shock if so. There isn’t any money in it for the organisers right now.
-
• #2297
You must have a really high bar for inspiration! I've ridden around lots of the route over the years and can't think of many duff bits...
-

At some point they might get some issues from the fact that you can't have a race on public roads in the UK without lots of marshalls, risk assessments and other stuff that they won't have.
Ironic, considering one of their rules is:
ALL RIDERS MUST KNOW, UNDERSTAND AND OBEY LOCAL TRAFFIC LAWS -

In terms of the route, I know exactly what you mean. When I looked at the route I was quietly disappointed.
I would have liked to see the west coast islands being utilised as the ferry timetables would have added in some intrigue. Certain areas like the less well visited bits of Argyll and the Kintyre peninsula would have been good to send the route through, rather than bashing through the well tramped bits like the Trossachs etc.....
As for money making, I don't know, but i do know that money is being thrown about at the moment for tourism in at home and there are lots of grants available for all sorts of ventures (I'm looking at a wind farm grant to set up a community cycling hub just off NCR 7) , so perhaps its been spawned off of the back of this?
Oddly, I quite fancy doing something similar to this, but on a modified route, that's not ill named.

Is that what the Baa Baa guys realised a bit too late?
Are you sure Scotland doesn't have some kind different rules?
42% done and 3 days 8hr under the current record:
