My new (old) Langster

  • Hi all,

I just joined this forum and have just bought my first 'proper' single speed. I say proper as my actual first single speed was a bright orange BTWin vitamin - which weighed a ton, had the steering responsiveness of a barge, was so under geared you were spinning out before you could get going and it felt like you were riding on solid tyres!

    Anyway, I digress!

The 'new' project is a 2007 langster in brown - the skull edition - and I'd been surreptitiously lusting for one for years after seeing a very same model at my local station many years ago :)

The bike's mostly still original spec, but needs a non-drive side crank arm (as a generic mtb shimano arm - in a different length to the drive side sugino arm - has been fitted), and a seat post and saddle (again, the originals were replaced).

It's also missing a pedal and currently has a single orange mks style fitted to the drive side arm.

I'll be fitting some profile airwings as the original drop bars look a bit bent on one side and was planning to use the original teatro levers (if they'll fit), else I'll get some it's or similar.

Regarding the missing crank arm can anybody recommend/suggest where I might find a replacement sugino arm - or alternatively an appropriate replacement crankset. I have been offered an older shimano 105 52/42 chainset (and only use the 42 ring to keep same gearing as original) which I believe uses the same square taper BB. Would the chain line be OK with this setup? Has anyone used this on a langster or other single speed?

All other advice and comments welcome :)

    Thank you,

    Mike

  • As the owner of a brown Langster I can tell you, you won't get many people complimenting you on it. Your lust will not be understood. Cracking bike all the same.

  • I loved my skull edition langster :) enjoy

  • I'm also a lover of the shit brown edition
    Photos needed

  • Here's the brown-beastie in all her poo-coloured glory - safe in the basement at work :)

Also, does anybody know what brand/style this pedal is?

    Cheers,

    Mike

  • Lovely ill get my shitter out later a post a pickie

  • Mate you need a new saddle ?

And you'll want different brake levers if you're going to run those airwings. I'd go risers and cross levers though.

  • Lol, yep I have a spare selle Italia in the parts bin :)

  • And these just arrived this morning too :)

  • Wow! Didn't even think to check amazon! Cheers!!

  • What parts you still looking for

  • Parts wise: I have some DMR flats I could put on, but not sure whether to go with something more in keeping (mks style).

I'd like an original specialized seat post, and will also put some bigger tyres on - 23's over the cobbles through my local town would be deadly :)

  • Just picked up a set of chukkers for mine will swap them over next week have to see what the fattest tyre i can run with can be going to run ss rather than fixed easier on my knees fire on a rear brake and loose the front
Probably going for a wider bar to make a more comfy ride and change the saddle back to a turbo as the chinease carbon thing i have is like sitting on a razor blade
Same as you with pedals will fit a pair of dmr's

See if I can source a set of forks as well not to Keen on the original langsters

  • It's been a while, but I finally had a spare day at the weekend - and spent it disassembling, cleaning and re-fitting, and today she was deployed to full-station-bike duties :) Here she is, in all of her poo-brown loveliness :D

  • I would get some different rims for mine, but as it's my station bike I dont really want to attract any unnecessary attention so it gets nicked :(

  • How is it? Comfortable?
