I can't find any online references to its use instead of 'M for Mike'?
May have been used briefly by the RAF, although other sources miss the intermediate step between Monkey and Mike

Why does every helpdesk person I speak to use 'M for Mother'
If they're constantly talking to yoofs who have never learned the ICAO version, they probably get a lot of idiots being told "M for Mike" and hearing "N for Nike" 🙂

You'd never hear "M for Mike" though, if you know the NATO alphabet you'd just spell and say "Mike Uniform Mike" for example. "S for sugar" anyone?
