Wanted: Waterproof cycling backpack

Posted on
  • I'm starting to commute to work on my bike in an effort to shave weight and transport costs, but I realised that I don't own a bag appropriate for commuting. Ideally one that doesn't also look completely mismatched when wearing a suit as well. I would also like to avoid backpacks that require a waterproof cover

  • Excuse the unsolicited advise, but panniers may be better than a backpack if you are cycling with a suit. Sweaty back on a suit might prove costly

  • Thanks bud. Want I meant is that because I wear a suit at work, I may need to bring the bag with me on client meetings. I would carry the trousers and shirt in the bag and get changed at work. Appreciate the advice though. I've never cycled with panniers before, always been comment with backpacks

  • Was about to post the same link... Big Top and Mack Workshop do great waterproof bags. I have a messenger from Big Top, after 5 years of regular use it still looks good and still performs well. Brooks may have something more office appropriate. But tbh much prefer panniers or a Brompton bag and let the bike carry the weight! There are smart looking panniers/backpacks made by Thule, Brooks and others

  • Could not recommend mackworkshop.

The quality and product is great, I’m a big fan. The customer service, lead time, lack of communication is abysmal. Myself and two other friends were some of his first customers, asking for all sorts, cash in pocket ready to go, he took on the jobs. Months and months, with ignoring messages, to oh yes I have started... his dad, a lovely chap, would then drop them off. It’s a big shame, we have vowed to no longer deal with him, which again is a shame because the products are great.

  • Big Top is quite the opposite!

  • Ortliebs look good,
I have a rapha one that is great, it has a fold out cover though.
For running I just bought a 10 litre one from decathlon that is meant to be pretty waterproof for.... £2.50, if you don’t need to carry much may be worth a test for the price!

  • Ortlieb do an urban range, brief cases etc, brilliant stuff backed with good support, im bias, but sjscycles have good prices on ortlieb stuff!

  • Honestly, I think that would have been perfect. Unfortunately I bought a t-level from someone on here on Thursday. Thanks all the same

  • +1 for Big Top. Got a few of his products and they're all great. Have had the backpack probably about 5 years. He'll also do custom stuff for a small charge - @BigH got a pretty sweet custom bag from him recently

  • I did but it took longer than a lot longer expected which was annoying but it was pretty custom so it is what it is..
