f2.8 would be way outside my price range for a zoom anyway
I highly recommend some of the original EF zooms, they're usually f3.5-4.5, USM, with a metal mount.
They're a stop faster and with a better build quality than the more recent kit zooms. Usually quite cheap too, I got my 28-105mm from mpb for <£100 last year.
