  • Short answer: Aluminium cleaner from your car parts retailer.

    Long answer:
The debate as to whether to preserve or enhance.
Often we see items better than when they were new. For alloy parts, the casting marks can be removed with a little time and effort not afforded at the factory. Later abrasions can be sanded back then buffed up. With a little time, a mirror finish can be achieved.
It depends on what finish I am after (because it is my bike, I get to make the choices).
A few months ago I did my GB Superhoods/Coureur brakes.

I was going for a more natural finish.
A soak in a kerosene bath to loosen years of crud, then into the ultrasonic cleaner.
The steel parts had the Evaporust treatment.
The alloy parts then had a quick treatment with an aluminium cleaner. Read the instructions as it works within a short time!
The link to the cleaner I used, you would need to find your own locally available product.
I bought it from the dominant car parts retailer in Australia.
I then wiped each part with a cloth and I liked the result. This was the limit of polishing. A wipe with a cloth.
Then reassembled the parts and used the oily rag to achieve a thin coat of protection.

Now to order the spokes so I can get the proper wheels built, adjust the brakes and then ride it.

  • Thanks very much for the detailed answer and exactly what I was after (natural finish)

  • Time for the shifter to come apart for a good clean as some of it is quite rusty-

  • Bloody hell! (switches tabs to amazon, orders a tub)

That stuff does the business, doesn't it?!

  • Now I'm gong to have to dismantle half the stuff I've stripped and serviced recently again, because now I know what all those steel nuts and bolts could look like...

  • Changing the bar tape to cotton.
Original bar ends are in very good condition.

  • Nice, I'm surprised at the range of colours available for the bar ends on the price list - I'm not quite sure why though.

The reproduction bar ends - What colours are you making those in?

  • Coloured rubber products were readily available. Not all was black. This is further evidence of that.
I was waiting for the weather to warm up to work in the garage. The temp needs to be up for the urethane to cure correctly.
I have made the mould, just need to cast a few, then consider colours.

  • Bit more cleaning

  • what cable outer is this? I need some for my simplex tour de france...?

  • ebay - 202468100043

  • the Nissen cable outers look good.
The cable outer above is sold in Italy for mopeds. But the seller refuses to post outside of Italy, so a roll was bought by a local, then posted to a collector in the USA and then I bought some from him.
It still available, if somewhat torturous to get it.

  • Let me know who is the seller.
Can get some for people here, bring it to UK and ship back. I go to Italy quite often to my girlfriend in Como.
