  • As every winter, rain is here and I'm experimenting with overshoes, winter boots and the like to arrive to work with dry shoes.
So far, nothing works 100%, wonder if anyone found the holy grail of commuting? If so please enlighten us

  • riding on roads - mudguards
riding off roads - wool socks, shoes that drain easily. NOT waterproof shoes.

  • Sealskins are the only option.

  • Another pair of shoes+socks in a pannier bag.

  • Another pair of shoes+socks in a pannier bag.

Or keep another pair at work and rotate when wet so you always have a dry pair for the commute home.

  • I don't wear the black and red ones only wear the red and black ones.

  • been using these off road and love them.
will probs commute in them over winter.

  • +1 on the Sealskinz

  • Look ridiculous but v v good - https://www.spatzwear.com/

  • Sealskinz are fine until they fill with water and it has nowhere to go.

@Netakure you commute on the GT? Mudguards are the way to go. Have my pdw if you want, even just to try. Rear was bent when the wheel got nicked but the front is fine and is what will keep your feet dry

  • God that website is awful.

    Shoes look interesting though.

  • sealskinz last approx 30-40mins in proper rain.
i quite like the look of velotoze but haven't actually tried them

only thing that works 100% is wellies + waterproof trousers.

  • I have sealskins. Ok-ish in moderate rain, useless in really wet roads.

Second pair of shoes is a decent solution, unless you have several days of rain. Then you'll have two pairs of wet shoes.

@alialias I used longboards on the GT, closest I've been to winter happiness is longboards + winter boots.

Latest silly acquisition, so far I've got the girlfriend having a laugh at my BDSM overshoes and a moderate success wearing them under the bibs. Still, some water ingress, may test further

  • Can you make the longboards even longer to stop the spray from the front wheel? Can you combine the sealskins, winter boots and overshoes?

  • Velotoze are an Absolute pita to get on.. worst purchase in a long time. But Very effective and very aero. Got 2 trips out of them
Apparently the proper technique is to roll anklet style up the ankle and unravel them over the shoe.. at which point they tear and you put them in bin.

  • the holy grail of commuting?

Loooong guards and a set of toe Johnnies,

  • And by long, I mean with a flap that scrapes the ground when you turn the bars.

  • I know that the practical solution is big ass mudguards, but I'm still searching for some other way for when my winter biek is out of commission or I have it with cross tires and no guards.
So far only taping the ankles of my winter boots or velotoze gave some results, but none of these is practical enough for everyday riding

  • I have a set of these that I used to use when I had flat pedals on my commuting bike.

Look a bit silly but will keep your feet 100% bone dry and can fit over whatever shoes you wear to work in.

  • Was gonna ask what the solution would be when riding flats or flats and straps.
    Thanks

  • I also have a pair of waterproof trainers from Sports Direct now which are pretty good. Think they are "fishing" trainers but they're good for cycling.

  • keep another pair at work

Yeah, I don't see why this is difficult. There's always somewhere to stash a pair of shoes.

There's a reason total feet waterproofing is a holy grail problem. The solution doesn't exist.
