I imagine we'll spend plenty of time wandering around. What's the transport like there? Staying right in the centre looks pricey so pondering being a bit further out. Is there easy bike hire, is the metro decent?

I didn't take any public transport other than the bus to and from the airport, which was very efficient. I stayed between the Rijksmuseum and Vondelpark (very pleasant), which is a pricey area, but completely walkable to the centre (but then I like walking).
