  • Not so up on the ford era Volvo's, d5 went from being a single turbo 5 cylinder to a twin turbo and then a single turbo 4 cylinder right at the end before being the new ones. Which are all 4 cylinder and around 2.0 displacement.

    V70 are nice, v60 is a jazzed up modneo, which is good and bad, good for driving, bad for space, and you buy a Volvo because you want space.
    Those last V70 are mostly specced with mid powered auto diesel and tbh they suit that. Not exciting, but a nice place to spend a lot of miles. They are popping up for around 3.5-5k for good older ones (2007.5-2010)

  • Isn't it the 5 pot D5 that's the good one? From what I've read you get plenty of power but good mpg on the motorway?

  • Also, it's a shame the 2nd gen is getting quite old, I really like this interior

  • Mondeo is not a bad vehicle, cheap and cheerful.

    Personally after owning a volvo estate, it is the little touches that I like. Things that have been thought out. An example is the trigger to lift the rear seat base. The flat boot floor, level bumper and boot floor.

  • It looks pretty good value if it's the car they describe it being.

  • It's not a Clubsport though, and really that's the car you would want.

  • Took the MG back in for them to have another go at fixing the overdrive. Also to change the indicator flasher unit that was fuxxored.

    Sorted the OD by replacing the pump and solenoid.

    When I asked how much, he told me it was gratis, as they had made such a meal of the overdrive last time.

    I was speechless. That is amazing service.

    The car is running better than I can remember and I am driving it to North Wales and back this weekend, in the sunshine. Happy days!

  • Yes but how much would the equivalent Clubsport be? I'd hazard a guess it would be a good chunk more money.

  • I think that values will be down significantly next year- when all we have to eat are badgers that we have found in our snares- so that would be the time to look.

  • At what point should i stop having my 5yr old skoda serviced at a main dealer?

    I'm due a service and cambelt at christmas, main dealer want £499 for the cambelt and water pump to be done, and that's on top of the annual service!

  • until something catastrophic lets go or i move to a different country, whichever comes first.

  • Over here in Sweden I’d say dealer service has value for about 5-10 years, esp for cars bought be people who doesn’t know much about cars. Dealer stamps is the only way for them to judge it.

  • But if you are never going to sell it future value is academic.

  • I think this time i'll get it done at the dealer, just to keep the history going until the 5th anniversary, but after that i'll be doing more of the routine stuff myself i think

  • If it’s a main service it seems worth it, but after that perhaps not. Check warranties though, I think you might have to service the car at the dealership for it to be valid

  • Anyone ever gone from new car ownership to old car ownership?

    I've put 5000 miles on my 220 trophy in the nearly two years I've owned it. It's not costing me much, <10% of monthly salary all in for loan, tax and insurance, but at the same time it would be nice to have no loan at all.

    I could probably go car free, and get by using the zipcar on my road for the odd drive I do, but at the same time it would be nice to have something to jump in and go as needed.

    Was thinking of going back to a 172 cup. Would be 10k better off (loan free), still have a car for the odd trip to the shop or to the vet with the dog etc, and be less precious about it.

    Would it feel like a massive down grade to go back in the years?

  • Exactly what I did, 2 year old Mazda 6 estate back to 7 year old Subaru Outback, now 12 years old and paid off. Hard to consider going back to paying a monthly loan on something newer.

  • As long as the 172 doesn't need a full suspension rebuild or engine rebuild.... It'll be fine

  • My experience of buying old cars is that they are not cheaper than new ones.
