  • If I know the length of spokes a wheel was built with and I want to reuse the rim from that wheel with a different hub with 10mm smaller spoke hole circle, is there an easy way to calculate how much longer the new spokes will need to be?

It's a bmx rim with weird offset drilling so I'm thinking calculating the spoke length is gonna be a ball ache?

  • rim with weird offset drilling so I'm thinking calculating the spoke length is gonna be a ball ache?

It's no worse than any other spoke length calculation, you just change the flange offset from centre to compensate for the rim drilling offset from centre.

  • @mdcc_tester thank you.

So there’s about 14mm between the centres of the holes so 7mm off centre each side. Do I just subtract the full 7mm off the flange distance for the hub?

I think I’ve measured nipple seat diameter at 397mm but the leonard.io calculator asks for ERD not NSD so I need to add like 3mm right?

Yes, from the two (possibly different) centre-to-flange distances.

  • Yes, from the two (possibly different) centre-to-flange distances.

Nice one cheers, Aye there's 2mm between them.

  • Success.

Old spokes were 4mm too short for 3x and 4mm too long for 2x on the new hub so 2x + 2 twists = bang on.

  • Ace!

  • dt swiss r460 24 hole.
What's the cheapest delivered price ?
    I've got 36.19 euro at Bike24.

  • has anyone used this truing stand from ebay? https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/282813986723?var=582139153386

  • NASA prototype?

  • That's a really good price even with the postage. I imagine there would be import tax as well. Nice clean look, good sized knobs, dial gauges and one for truing disc rotors. I would have snapped this up in my early days. But now I have the P & K Lie and it looks like it is modelled on that design, especially with the brass accents.

  • thanks for the feedback! I certainly trust you with your experience.
as a beginner, looking to build my first few wheelsets, would you say it's a good buy? or anything else to look at around this price bar the park ts2?

  • It's not one I've seen before so it's only going by the pictures. The main thing with the truing stand is that it holds the wheel securely and doesn't wobble. From the pictures it looks like you'll have to screw it down to a bench or table. The Cyclus one is very similar to the TS-2

No dial gauges though as with the one from Hong Kong.

I'm looking to sell my Pro-Lite stand as I seem to use my P & K Lie most of the time. Just waiting for thru axle adapters.

X-tools have a similar looking one.

Think about resale potential if you only plan to build a few wheels.

  • thanks.
please can I have dibs on the pro-lite you're selling? let me know when it's ready to sell.

  • I'll ask for second dibs please

  • ERD was about 565 mm. I'm assuming this pacenti TL28 with a 567mm ERD will be an ok replacement?

It worked out fine. I must say straight pull spokes weren't so bad to work with, lacing was very easy. The DT hubs are clever things with different diameter flanges and equal spoke length all around.

  • as a beginner, looking to build my first few wheelsets, would you say it's a good buy?

I probably built 20+ wheels in forks and frames before I invested in a truing stand and only did that because I was able t spend a b2w voucher on it.

  • On one el guapo hubs - are these the same as some others so I can get alternate and caps from another source?

  • Does anyone know what size nipples https://leonard.io/edd/ uses with the spoke length calculations?

I assumed it was 12mm long nipples but want to make sure.

  • Ta!

  • Has anyone had experience building with Velocity quill rims?

  • Yes. They're fucking awful. Avoid like the plague. I'm about to unbuild a pair of wheels so I can replace the almost-new Quills with XR 26Ts.

  • Oh really! How come?

  • The price is high, the quality is poor, and the brake track is stupidly shallow. But by far the biggest problem is that the recess in the middle of the rim for the bead to drop into when you're fitting the tyre isn't deep enough. So if you put more than one layer of tape on, it's impossible to fit a tyre at all. With one layer of tape it is just possible to fit a tyre, but only with immense time and effort, bloodied knuckles and, in my case, bellowing screams of pure rage. Then, when you've finally got the tyre on, it has very little interest in seating properly because the beads are already stretched tight.

It's a poor design which has ben badly implemented and they're spectacularly overpriced. The XR26T is a better rim in every conceivable way.
