Dynamo Lights

  • I think it’s just that the e3 pro 2 has an on/off button (which I just found out doesn’t turn the stand light off if you’ve been riding and then stop)

  • ah yeah .. I think thats a german requirement to have a daytime light, do either have sensors or its either on or off?

  • Max value. Same reason people by Porsche for commuting to work in. It might be able to do 250mph but you're not going to do it often nor for very long.

  • Your link actually says "max 900" so I wonder if that's an error in their specs.

  • I guess it depends on how much you want to see or if you just want to be seen. For most people riding in cities and towns blinky LEDs will get you seen and street lights are enough to see where you're going. On country lanes you need something mid to high level brightness.

That said lots of cyclists have lights that are far too bright and so many don't seem to understand how to position a front light (IE dipped slightly). Shining huge lights in peoples eyes isn't keeping anyone safe.

  • Pure doesn't have a switch?

    Edit: new page fail

  • Pretty damn close. The Pro 2 has an on and off switch, which can be nice if you want to turn off and use a usb charger off of your dynamo during the day.

  • I only have the e2 pro 2, I don’t think it has a daytime mode or sensor, if you switch it off then it’s off, I think the idea being that you can then divert the power to a usb charger or something else when the light isn’t needed during the day.

What I meant about the stand light was that I thought that if i cycled to the shops in the dark with the light on, then wanted to lock up and turn the stand light off, to not attract attention, then the switch would do that. It doesn’t, the stand light will still be on until the capacitor drains. (Hope that makes slightly more sense)

  • Shame they don't make this in a non e-bike version. Looks cool and has separate switchable high beam for off road/no traffic

  • So the Addict R1 needs wirey bits.

Dotwatching is bad for the wallet. Skinny, Hippy, Samuli, Carlos (ex-clubmate) et al, I hope you´re pleased with yourselves. I´ll be having a word with you lot in the Grote Markt in Geraardsbergen in a couple of years´time.

    Anyway, I have two questions.

    1) I will, at least for now, be using a big saddlebag like I do on the London Road (fat-tyre allroad bikepacking setup). What´s the word on seatstay-mounted lights? I don´t mind replacing batteries or charging taillights and would like less rather than more wiring, but if there´s a superior generator-powered, seatstay-mounted taillight out there, that´s no deal-breaker.

    2) I run an E-Werk on the London Road and have been happy with it. Is dropping the extra cash (Cycle Basar have the E-Werk for 85 euros) on a Sinewave worth it for powering a largish-screened smartphone? I´ll build a wheel around an SV-8 and fit an IQ-X and charge a Moto G4 or G3. The E-Werk, powered by an XT hub and wired with an Edelux II, charges the latter like a boss even while running Osmand and lights but only trickles the former at 25kph with lights off. Would a Sinewave pull it off?

    2) Will running a headlight only (as in without a generator-powered taillight) result in any noticeable improvement in front light and/or charging output?

  • Looking for some dynamo lights.
Front maybe £30, Rear more like £20
HMU if you have anything suitable

  • B&M stuff can be had brand new for that kinda price

  • yep, I know, just looking to keep things in the forum!

  • I’ve been wondering about doing something like this [Sugru the seams & hole of light casing). Nice one Max.

  • All right, I´ll try again with fewer words. What seatstay mounted taillight?

  • b&m secula plus

  • Everything can be mounted to a seatstay with enough gaffa tape and/or zip ties.

  • I have this one on one of my bikes. Works really well. Just need to check that it's tight otherwise it can rotate. Think I shimmed it due to it hitting the spokes initially.

  • I've had a Secula for years, has been good. Until recently it was attached to Carradice Bagman, but now I had a place brazed for it to the seatstay.

Cheap, has been durable, bright but not too annoying for anyone riding behind. The standlight can't be switched off.

Taillights don't take much of the hubs output. I don't remember seeing comparisons of the efficiency of the chargers and don't charge when the lights are on.

  • +1, not had any problems with mine.. comes with a big tie wrap if you don't have braze ons/mounts, clipped it to my seatpost no probs

  • Thanks for the advice. I think I´ll try the Secula as it comes with a reflector and capacitor.

Yes Hippy of course anything can be mounted to a seatstay but I´m going for a slightly more refined look than Philips/Spanninga Lumiring/Elips rack-mount lights (big fan) mounted with Ikea shelf brackets or bent Brompton reflector brackets as in the rest of the fleet.
