  • But what's the point on having a light adventure bike? You're not racing anyone so what if it does take 3 seconds more to go up a hill?

  • It’s more about how the bike feel than the weight, for some the sluggish feeling and slow handling felt like hard work.

I empathise, going for an Arkose give me a good balance of stiffness and stability, not fast but not a slouch.

  • my cdf size L weighs 11.7 with mudgards, dyno-hub, rear rack, carbon fork and 1xset-up. but it is just my commuter and still the heavies bikes in my stable.

you could loose a lot of weight, but you could invest the money in a better/lighter f&f

  • Yeah, what's the point on having a bike that's less than 14kg, right?

  • But what's the point on having a light adventure bike?

Sounds ace to me. I mean even when camping it’s nicer if the bike if it doesn’t feel like a loaded truck. Then for shorter, quicker rides a light bike is just more enjoyable and slightly faster.

..... why am I explaining this. It’s obvious no?

    ;-)

  • Me and a couple mates rode up Leith hill on our loaded bikes with camping gear. I prayed for a few kilos less and that’s by no means a big hill

  • Granted I was pushing 1x 58 chainring and a 23t cassette coz I’m a fucking beast but still

  • 1x 58 chainring and a 23t cassette

If you can't cope with that gearing, then you shouldn't be allowed to own a gravel bike.

  • Grabs popcorn 🍿

  • Granted I was pushing 1x 58 chainring and a 23t cassette coz I’m a fucking beast but still

That's a mite high for a gravel bike, surely a 53t would sufficient?

  • Still, I don't get people spending loads on money on a lightweight carbon frame that will get massive tires, disc brakes, bags, dynamo, mudguards, etc. Of the 14 kg bike you may get a 13 kg bike, hardly a hill climb bike

  • 23t cassette

What are you, some sort of tiny legless baby? I threw the cassette away, I only need the 11t.

  • Again, the point isn't the weight of the carbon bike but the ride of it, not everyone is content with a bicycle that's slow to handle and felt sluggish to ride.

Of the 14 kg bike you may get a 13 kg bike, hardly a hill climb bike.

13kg is a staggering amount, more like 10 and a half.

  • Right Ed, so any recommendations on cheap but decent disc hub that is :
    Front TA 100x15
    Rear QR 135
    Preferably centre lock
Wager it will be a novatec from ali, but which one?

  • Dt Swiss P1800 Spline.

  • Cheers mate, Will look into it.
prefer building my own hence the hub question.

  • Right ok the big gear joke was funny the first time, we can all move on now

  • If you're going DT at least get the ratchet... DT 350, I've got 2 sets they've been great, one is laced up to some £20 Pacenti SL25 from PX, They weigh like 1500g.

  • Yes boss. My apologies

    • Get the heavy gravgrav bike
    • ride lots
    • get strong
    • race on the weenie road bike
      ?????
    • profit
  • Don't get me wrong about the Sequoia....it's a good bike.
When you start out on a ride, it feels heavy, but smooth. After about three hours you don't notice the weight and after 5-6 hours, it becomes momentum. It's a good bike! But I sometimes have a hankering for a lighter good bike.....the hunt 650b wheels made a hell of a difference too....

  • That a good description. Especially after 5 hours when you start feeling fragility.

  • Currently riding around Arran on this.

Absolutely cracking. Bit like a steel arkose but much more fun than the arkose I had. Thru axle front and back. All the mounts you could want.

If you can get one in the UK I recommend it. I was lucky enough to have a friend ship me one.

    Norco search xr steel

  • Saw this bike at Dirty Reiver this year. Pretty wild. Don't remember the levers though.

  • That Norco looks bloody fantastic indeed. Quite a jump in price compared to the Arkose though
