Those new 29er pk ripper bikes the kids are on. Wtf?
-
• #2203
Hmm, as a BMXer I've never condoned it.

There is a big scene of 'street rides' in america, which as far as I can tell involves riding like a dick in traffic, i assume 'the kids' are emulating this.

u mean bikestormz?

Ah.
I'm so used to London kids popping wheelies in traffic on hybrids (yesterday I saw someone do a 360 spin on the back wheel (i'm sure it has a name like "keo spin" or some shit) on a fucking hybrid), rinsing ofo bikes etc, that I can't see why they'd want those pk shitters. -

I’ve never got, horses.
You only ever see them plodding around the lanes at roughly human walking speed. What’s the point.
Happened upon horses 3 times this weekend, first time was while cycling and was fine, nice and sociable.
Second time was later on the same ride, a pair of older ladies who didn’t seem to know what side of the road to move over to or to be very in control of their horses. They insisted we slow down to sub walking pace and berated us for not talking to them “the horse needs to know you’re human”. Might have spoken to you a) had you not made us slow down on a bastard hill we were already struggling up pretty slowly and b) if you shut up for a minute so we could get a word in edgeways.
Third time was out in the motorbike and was in similar area to the second encounter and I think might have been at least one of the same people. Again didn’t seem very in control of the horse and seemed to be trying to signal me to lift my visor.
If your horse can’t deal with ‘non human’ vehicles, should it really be on the road?

Change 'horse' for 'cyclist' in your post.
Unless it was just very good satire that's gone over my head.
-
• #2211
Yeah... I guess.
Can’t imagine I’d get far flagging drivers down to do 5mph and prove themselves human as they pass me though.

The calling out bad cyclists thread beckons.

I have wondered this. I should preface this with the fact that I'm pretty ignorant of horse things and that I do, of course, slow down and pass horses very carefully on my bike and in my car.
I have often found myself wondering where the pleasure lies in sitting on a horse walking at 5mph down the road.
Do they just use roads to get between fields where they can run about and jump over stuff? Or is the plodding along a road bit as good as it gets?

I try and adopt a "whatever floats your boat" attitude to it and I do try to be as considerate as possible (see below) and usually it goes as did my first horsey encounter of the weekend, exchange hellos, the horse rider(s) are generally appreciative that you've slowed down or let them know you are approaching etc and everyone gets on with their day and their chosen activity.
My original post maybe came across a bit arrogant and gave the impression that I would be happy to just tear past horses with little regard for them or their rider but I assure you that's not the case.
I'm happy to share the countryside and as a motorcyclist I'm particularly aware that a horse could be spooked by the noise of the bike (though my bike is not loud in the slightest, fuck knows what happens if you're riding a horse and a harley passes). If I meet a horse on a narrow road I'll often stop and kill the engine and allow horse and rider to pass me at their pace. Similar story on the mountain bike, if I come across a horse on a path, might as well just pull over and grab a drink and allow them to do their thing.
I do think though that if you're gonna ride your horse down the middle of the road, you should know which side of the road to move over to and you should be able to deal with very slow moving cyclists who don't want to, or choose not to, talk to you.

My favourite is when someone does a close pass when I'm on my bike with a "slow down for horses" sticker in the window.
The bit of me that cares about animal rights has more to say but never mind that

I got shouted at once by a horsey lady - after slowing down, saying hello, and keeping my distance until it was safe to pass - who said I was acting recklessly and that it was obvious I'd never done my CBT training.
My distinct lack of motorcycle must've alerted her to that.

In hindsight, maybe she meant cognitive behavioural therapy.

CBT training.
Maybe she meant the 'other' CBT?
cognitive behavioural therapy.
not that one either

Yes.
Although I say that as someone who's never ridden a horse in the UK (Jersey is about as close as I've got).
The pleasure of potting along for me has generally been that it's a great way to experience your environment - especially if there are hedge rows. A bit like cycling or trekking but with better visibility and less effort.
But ultimately the fun is fucking caning it full plet in sync with the horse feeling like a boss. Although you and the horse can only do that for so long.

I've never had any issues. I just say 'cyclist(s) coming through' and pass them with much room to spare.
Apparently, horses can be spooked by the sound of freewheels, so keep pedalling if you're on gears (spits).
-
• #2222
My understanding was they got spooked by you overtaking quietly - hence the need to shout.
Is there a horse thread?
-
• #2223
They get spooked at anything other than PERFECT cable routing.
And don't even think about letting them see frayed or scruffy bar tape.

Apparently, horses can be spooked by the sound of freewheels,
Who the hell thinks that a public road is an appropriate place for an animal which gets spooked by a quiet clicking sound - and possibly injures it's rider and other road users?

Fuuuuck me
You do realise pedestrians and horses came before bikes, motorbikes and cars?
Have you not seen pedestrians and cyclists who get spooked by inconsiderate cyclists, motorcyclists and drivers?
Highway Code suggests to give the same clearance or peds, cyclists, horses. IE don’t be a dick.
You're ten years too late with that one, my friend...
