I have a Thomson shim which allows you to use any standard A-head stem with a 1" threadless steerer.
Might be a more affordable option if you already have a stem. Like this
Yah I've got a shimmed thomson stem currently, but is hardly the most elegant solution.
A shim is perfectly sound engineering and suffers from no unwanted movement. Remember the stem should be done up to recommended torque which should allow no movement in use but a bit of "give" in the event of a crash.
