  • Swain's Lane's 'a pretty standard London residential street'?

  • Oh I don't know, there's a pub at the bottom, a Tesco's Express, a school, a graveyard, sweat and tears, shattered dreams and tales of heroic deeds. Standard :)

  • Can you enter this fixed? Can't see anything on their website

  • You can, but you need a front brake

  • Tempting. Have to laugh at the front brake being needed haha

  • Two braking mechanisms is a legal requirement for UK roads so I don't see them being able to ignore it.

  • Yes, while it doesn't matter on the uphill closed road course itself, the race HQ/changing facility was in a nearby school a few years ago (or some other public building, I can't remember) and probably will be again, the run back to the start is down Highgate West Hill, which won't be reserved for the race (they probably wouldn't take people's promises to walk down at face value), and people would most likely warm up in the surrounding streets, so there's plenty of need for a brake.

It's not a legal requirement while you stay off the open public highway (they've run brakless crits here on closed roads), but the organiser obviously has discretion to demand it if there's a good chance people would be riding around, which there is here. Regardless of discretion, it's also probably an insurance requirement.

  • CTT rules require a brake. Do the fixed crits happen on actual roads or just cycle circuits?

Do the two brake rules disappear when the road is closed? What other rules go? Obviously there must be some limits - guessing you couldn't drive a car on closed roads with no brakes, for example, even if there were no other road users?

Yes, but the Hill Climb isn't run under any organisation's regs, or is it?

The one in the Greenwich Peninsula was on closed roads.

Do the two brake rules disappear when the road is closed? What other rules go?

That depends entirely on what the traffic order says. Depending on the event, it could be anything, e.g. if you need to park a crane in a narrow side street you can temporarily suspend pedestrian access.

    Hipster sport waiting to happen?

  • Who’s here today? No racing for me - a year of busted ankle and busted lungs have demoted me to support staff. Will be near the top, with bells shouting at @youngdonkey (and anyone else who needs it)

  • I just raced, messed up my start by being late for it 😅
    Very fun!!

  • @branwen @HoKe @KT_Bee @WornCleat lovely to see you all at Swains Lane this afternoon, great weather and great atmosphere
    Well done Rollapaluza / Caspar

  • Hi kat! Sorry I was completely spaced out as my legs and mind was in a world of their own!

  • Ditto! Next year your on the start line! 😜

  • Yeah - there were a lot of very broken people on the ground after the finish line, I don’t blame you. Lovely to see you and lots of other familiar faces including @almac68 @branwen

  • Urghh

  • that guy is a monster on Q1!

  • Good to see you all. Now I can regret missing out on 4th place in the 60+ category. I may wwell regret missing out next year as well.

  • Rider photos are going out. Hopefully some will make their way here ...

  • anyone riding this year?

  • This just popped up from LCC...

  • I hear @PhilDAS is building a bike to compete in this event

  • The cargo category is kinda tempting.
Though I'm not really sure why it's £25 to enter

  • They probably have to pay for the road closure.
