If I'm looking to build a SS rear wheel for disc brakes with 135mm QR axle (or bolt on, if it'll fit a QR frame? Not sure if it will or not?), what are my hub options? Is it Surly GTFO?
I already have plenty of regular freehub wheels, I want SS specific for bombproof-ness and cheap-ness of freewheel replacments.

Use a freehub, HG sprockets are much cheaper to replace than freewheels and you have a wider choice of sizes. Hope Pro4 Trials is the obvious choice, but Novatec D252SB is half the price and just as good.

BLB has a (never ending) sale on with Velocity NMSW rims.
They have just dropped the B43 rims in 48h down to £19.99 for black and white.

This is true. Unfortunately - in my experience at least - the free hub tends to be the weak link when it comes to bombproof-ness.. Ive got a SS beater that I've had for donkeys years, I've never changed the freewheel in the entire time I've owned it, it just runs and runs. I've had free hubs - incidentally Novatec - that didn't survive one winter.
The sprockets are cheap but the freehubs aren't! Also tbf, while you can spend £££ on white industries etc, shimano and particularly dicta freewheels are pretty dirt cheap, cheaper than some SS sprockets! That's the main reason I'd prefer a SS specific hub, but that novatec is an option, although it's quite hard to find and I suspect the free hub for it would be even harder to get hold of, and probably nearly as much as a new hub - which is essentially what I wanted to avoid.
Food for thought though, cheers.

DMR revolver, heavy but I've had one on a polo wheel for many years and it's been fine.

Plenty mountain bike hubs available in that configuration, Couple in here,

I had a Tensile hub but that came as part of a wheelset. DMR as mentioned.
If you have £££ then Paul Word?

Any thoughts or comments on thru axle adapters? Don't really want to spend 60 odd quid on the Park one when you can get a cheap Chinese one.
What do you guys reckon?

Yes they will

Buy the son hub. Seen to many do hubs fail. They are not servicable.

The park ones are easy to use. Those cheap ones would add time to my wheel building as I have to pull the axle out to stress on the bench.

Surly hubs are pretty good. Used many and no complaints yet.

Not sure if this will be of use but I purchased rim tape in bulk from Aliexpress.com as I couldn't get decent prices in the UK.
Cheapest UK rim tape I ever found was Planet X at £7.90 for 10. 79p each
This was £13.38 posted for 40 and you can mix sizes. 34p each

Thanks for this, I'll check them out.

Ah yes, good point. But then I don't think I build as many as you do. Been talking to Ryan in Bristol and he is recommending the P & K Lie ones especially as I have the stand.
I have a Pro-Lite truing stand as well which rarely gets used other than for thru axle hubs. So the reason for getting the truing stand adapters is so I can then sell the Pro-Lite stand.

Anyone know a source for ERD of dt swiss rims from their factory wheels? I've just bought a "m1900 spline 27.5" (internal width 22.5mm, yellow decals, 142x12 spacing) wheelset where the rear rim is a bit f*cked. It'll do for now but I'll be looking for a replacement soonish.

Can i ask a quick hub rebuild question please. i've replaced the bearings in my novatec d772 hub. Do peaple use a threadlock compound on the hub axle as i have to back of the locking nut "half a turn" to get smooth operation. thanks

Answering my own question here, the ERD was about 565 mm. I'm assuming this pacenti TL28 with a 567mm ERD will be an ok replacement..?

Are you hoping to reuse spokes?
-
• #7871
Do peaple use a threadlock compound
No, I never have.
-
• #7872
reuse spokes
Yes fam
-
• #7873
Outside my experience but gut feeling is that 1mm on every spoke is quite a lot. Does it need to be cheap as well?
-
• #7874
If you have to back the locking nut for the bearings to spin freely ,you have botched the bearing replacement at some point.

What spoke key should I use for fat Dutch bike nipples? Some of the spokes on the rear rim have gone totally slack, so I figure I should probably back them all off and try tightening up from scratch. I guess this means using something better than the one that came with my cheapo bike tools kit?
I don't believe so.
