Good old 90's, the time when bikes were exciting
Do you think they were thought of as exciting at the time though?

I'm not sure really because that's the time when every brand did heavy experimenting with bike design/geometry and different materials. Thus a bike like that wasn't that much extraordinary I guess. Then again every road bike looked the same, steel tubing and regular triangle geo.
I really like the intuitive and experimental approach rather than expensive R&D, FEM, aero tunnels and stuff though.
