  • @jgadd I think it's a good set for the most part, but for me personally I much prefer the more artistic single-rider photos rather than the group ones.

A nicely framed racer making their way through the environment of a CX course is much more interesting to me from a visual standpoint than a shot of a mass start (full of people I don't know).

I suppose it's differentiating between artistic cycling photography and race reportage. Of course the best photographers can do both, but I suppose that requires a bit more of a creative 'risk' on the day.

That's just me though, and I'm barely more than a casual photographer, so take my opinion as just being that!

  • Thanks for that - I think you're right. I'm much more comfortable getting a personal shot of an isolated rider, but I felt that that sort of style was a bit 'dishonest' for a busy cycling race. There were a few things I wanted to get shots to communicate that I couldn't quite crack on the day, but I was much happier with the solo/double shots in the end.

I wasn't that bothered about 'reportage' to any greater extent than trying to get across a bit of a feel for the day and some personality for the people - that would definitely take a lot more skill and preparation than I had brought with me!
