You can get fat nipples from moped suppliers in 14/13/12g

Yeah or check out somewhere like Practical Cycles who specialise in non-sports bikes.

Yeah but won't I need mega thick spokes as well? Bike's a tank as it is.

No, they do those fat nipples in 14g, as I said. Your hubs will drive spoke gauge choice, you might find the hubs on a Dutch bike are better suited to 13g.

Here's the least expensive answer, hollandbikeshop sells the v38 rims and recommended these nipples:
Rim hole 13 appears to be the key search term here.

I've picked up a alfine wheelset (11sp gear hub and dynamo front). They're pretty damn heavy and spokes aren't in the best of shape.
These wheels will be on my Surly Disc Trucker and will be with 35-43mm tyres. Predominantly commuting, but the bit of forest track touring.
Thinking of rebuilding. Would Kinlin XR31 /TL-21 (700c) / TL-23 be a good choice? Looking for tubeless compatibility with Gravelking SKs.

So I’ve managed to destroy my rear Ksyrium Elite S rim (after having them 3 days, fresh off the forum)
I’ve been reading mixed things about if the rim is replaceable due to having some tricksy Mavic spoke nipples?! Can the Wheel Building Buddha Hive Mind of confirm if this is true, or a filthy rumor?
Thanks -

rear Ksyrium Elite S rim
You can replace the rim, it is available as a spare.
Spoke are expensive though, and Mavic only sells them in packs of 10.So by the time you get a rim (£75), a pack of spokes (£25), get someone to sort it (£40), you might want to get a used rear replacement wheel.

Another wheel it is then.
Cheers for the info! -

I have a 32 spoke A23 rims on hope hubs, would I be able to feel any real difference in speed, comfort or stiffness if I purchased something like the Hunt aero wide wheels?

If anyone needs a cheap replacement freehub for their novatec hub:
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/dk/en/prime-rd010-r010-freehub-body-abg/rp-prod145119
This is the B2 version (should say on hub)edit:
There are 2 versions:with 6902 bearings 28mmx15mmx7mm
and with 15267 bearings 26mmx15mmx7mm
I guess 6902 version is best because of larger bearings but there is thicker aluminium sidewalls in the other version.

DT alpine III or Sapim force. Sapim strong will do. Then again my 24spoke disc brake wheels built with CX rays are going strong on the commutor.

Thats the price novatec sell them for. Chain reaction really need to learn how to mark up.

It might be what they sell them to you for, it's just possible that CRC have managed to negotiate a discount 🙂

So many places I could post this but I'll start here. I'm looking to build up a dynamo front wheel for the TAW race in June. Prob a disk brake one to go on a Kinesis 4S which is has QR dropouts.
Going to get a 32H SP dynamo hub, is it worth getting a 12mm thru axle hub and using a QR adaptor so that the wheel is future proofed in the event I buy a new frame?
For the rim, I was looking at the DT Swiss RR 511 - Is this a good choice or are their better/cheaper options out there?
And spoke wise, Ideally I want aero spokes - are the new DT Aero ones @mdcc_tester mentioned recently a good bet?
Thanks!

Just my two cents, but I'd agree that going for the 12mmTA option with an adapter.
For rims consider the Kinlin XR options great quality and value. @cycleclinic has a selection on his site.
For a 32spoke where I don't think the benenfit of aero spokes is that significant and you're probably better off going with something like a Sapim Race or DT equivalent.

Dt swiss new aero are ovalized 2mm spokes and require a hub with keyhole spoke holes for the 3.3mm blade.
example:
(It is possible to do this yourself if you insist :) https://www.wheelfanatyk.com/blog/rare-aero-trickery/

I built a wheel with a rim brake DT RR511 and the rim's stiff, round, good quality, nice finish etc... But it's quite narrow. Inner width is ok I suppose, but at less than 22mm outside, when fitting 25mm+ tyres, the profile enters entering sub-optimal lightbulb territory.
You would be better served by something wider. -

Thanks all. I like the sound of the Kilin XR 31 and Sapim Race spokes. I care about aeros but it doesn’t seem the gain is worth it.
Maybe the wrong thread, but I’m totally confused by disk hub/skewer standards. I think I want a 6 bolt hub that I can use with 12mm thru axle and also normal road QR. Does this exist and if so, anyone know the SP Dynamo model I’m looking for?
-
• #7847
You want this:
https://www.spacycles.co.uk/m2b0s133p3776/SP-DYNAMO-PD-8X-Thu-Axle-6-BoltThen a generic QR adaptor like this:

Bit late but years back I built the early disc version of that hub radially. Didn't ride it straight away but got it up to tension. A week or so later it split and part of the flange flew across the room. Bugger.

Awesome, thanks. One last question, is it possible to adapt the other way round, so QR hub and 12mm thru axle forks?
-
• #7850
QR to Thru Axle conversion on sp dynamos is not possible. Btw, my pd-8x was shipped with a qr adapter, so you dont need to buy a generic one :)
@russmeyer 11G nipples?
