Is there a super compact down alternative? A synth bag of some sort that packs super small?

no.
synthetic bags will always be noticeable more bulky when packed, compared to a high fill power (800+) down bag of the same temperature rating.

So, what I'm now going to work on is designing a synth bag that's better than down. Someone must already be working on this so why isn't there a solution yet? Fucking material scientists, lazy bastards...
