Recommendations for vinyl cutting service

  • Hi all,

I'm doing some rattle can work and looking for somewhere which will cut and ship small quantities of masking vinyl to the UK. Preferably fully self-service online as I'm just messing around.

Does anyone know of a place? I've been googling but overwhelmingly finding window / car / stationary stickers, I haven't seen anyone offering low-adhesive masking materials.

Eventually I'll get round to a thread on my adventure with spray.bike cans, if anyone's interested. Today's lesson: after "good-from-far" success with hand cut stencils, I went to rub down with alcohol to remove any greasy fingerprints before the clear lacquer goes on and... well it turns out that isopropyl alcohol is an effective solvent for the pigments too. So bye bye crisp clear decals, hello streaky smudges everywhere.
If I'm going to do the whole thing again, I want smoother, computer cut curves this time! Still not sure how to clean between coats if I can't use alcohol or white spirits though. Maybe I'll be able to apply properly cut masks while wearing latex gloves.

    Ta,
    Mike

  • I had some done a while back just at a local signwriters, who mostly did cars and vans. They had a vinyl cutter and a stash of vinyl in stock. I just gave them my artwork and they cut it out for me. They had a selection of different thicknesses, glosses and tack levels on the vinyls. It might be worth just walking into a local place and seeing what they've got?

Having said that, I need to get some 550mm circles cut from gloss white and I can't find anyone here in my new area. Maybe I was just lucky in South London because there were loads of places like that still around. Place I used was on Croydon Road in Beckenham but I can't remember what they were called.

  • Mmm, thanks. There is a local one (Dalston) which I need to check out. Their website is all "call for a quote" which discourages small jobs, but perhaps they're friendly in person :)

That said, ironically, now we live in the future and all that, walk-in is much less convenient than self-serve online, because I have to physically visit during office hours. Modern life is pretty impersonal! :/

  • There’ll be someone on eBay doing this kinda thing I’m sure.

    How about this,

The ad says the bin price is for 1 line of text but lists their email address for you to get in touch with your needs.

I’ve bought several batches of stickers from a similar sort of seller and they’ve been great quality and waaay cheaper than any place with a stand alone site.

  • If you get really stuck I have access to a vinyl cutter, only problem being I’m in Glasgow.

  • Hah, you know I never thought custom work would be listed on ebay like that! Thanks

  • Thanks, I'll do what I can, but bear your kind offer in mind. PayPal could always be used to remunerate your time and postage, but I appreciate you're probably not trying to get in to the decal cutting business! :)

  • The vinyl cutter is in the fablab where I use a laser cutter.

I tried doing decals but never went very far with it as a) the vinyl stock the fablab has/had wasn't very sticky (which might actually make it more suited to your application) and b)single colour outline decals aren't very intersting. If I could print on it I'd probably have gotten into it.

  • now we live in the future and all that

The only people who think that are those who are living in the past. :)
