• This is a great thread! Lots to learn from as I'm looking to move to Manchester in 2020, rent for a year and then buy somewhere

Good luck @fizzy.bleach, doesn't seem easy from what I've read so far

  • Cheers. Trying to arrange to view places is quite testing. Stuff seems to go really quick, and agents are so unhelpful. Just don't seem interested in helping you find d somewhere to live.

  • Levy obviously, it'll be almost the new Chorlton by then.

  • Ah fuck this. Spent Thursday off work looking at places. Found one place we liked. Agents closed until today. Discover it got taken on Thursday afternoon after we viewed it. I'm not massively bothered, but my wife gets proper stressed about this kind of thing. I'm not sure how to break it to her.

  • Where was it... what agents have you been viewing with?

  • Unsworth and that was with Summermere. Now we've got an application in with a place in Whitefield through Normies.

  • Ah, out of my zone, can't help much there. Fingers crossed it goes smoothly.

  • OK - I'm officially going to be a resident of the Metropolitan Borough of Bury this time next week.

Moving to Whitefield/Sunnybank/Unsworth. I'm not sure of the exact boundaries. My son will be going to nursery in Prestwich.

I had a look at Bury Clarion CC but not sure if it's for me. Lots to think about at the minute, and cycling clubs isn't top of my list, but I'm keen to get more into the TT side of things.

  • Any beer or cycling related stuff going on hit me up BTW - especially if it's family/toddler friendly.

  • Congratulations!
Weekly fixed ride meets at Sandbar at around 7pm on a Wednesday, we're an okay bunch. Not a serious ride by any means. Fair range of people from out and out fixie kids to roadies

  • Cool, ta. What sort of routes and duration?

  • Sunnybank

There used to be a great bakery up there amazing cake.

NWvelofest is on end May into June
    http://nwvelofest.com

Paging @snottyotter for bike polo info.

  • Oh, there's a velodrome nearby too.

  • There used to be a great bakery up there amazing cake.

    Slattery's?

  • Thats the mega-posh one in Whitefield? This was a bit more normal, up by Sunnybank Primary Sch. Quick google suggests its now part of Martins Bakery shops.

  • We usually head south (most are based south), 20-30 miles at varying pace.
    The usual format is:
Meet at sandbar, have pint, ride to pub, stay too long, ride back.

    @rhb you should come too!
    not @snottyotter though.

  • North West velo fest is a good shout though, lots of opportunities to meet a big, varied slice of Manchester bikey people.

  • Yeah, I'll try and sort it to come along some time!

  • Thanks everyone for the tips. My dad and in-laws are in Holmes Chapel, so a nice 30-odd-mile ride out into Cheshire if I fancy it.

I'm a bit manic RN with moving jobs and cities - but looking forward to it massively.

  • Holmes Chapel

There's a nice craft ale bar by the coop there...

  • I bloody know! My wife's parents are obsessed.

  • Sorry @fizzy.bleach, I'm committing a forum sin by dredging this thread up, but it's exactly what I'm looking for!

Also looking to move North from deepest Devon in the coming months and could do with direction on area. Family friendly with plenty of countryside/parks close by, and walking distance to train station would be ideal with a circa 1hr or less commute to city centre by Public Transport or bike (not even going to contemplate driving in every day). Currently really keen on Glossop but it's a good way out of town and wondering if it might be too far.

Any thoughts of places to look a bit closer that fit the brief? Not made of money either unfortunately so <£190k for a nice 3 bed ideally.

    Thinking of train lines/times:

Calderdale (Tod/Hebden) 190 would get you alot of house in Todmorden.
    Hope Valley / Chinley
    Romiley/Disley/Whalley/Chapel etc even Buxton?
    Poynton / Macclesfield
Some bits of Bolton might be worth a look.

Enjoy the search. V.diff to Devon. Would happily move there!

  • Thanks! Some of these probably look a bit far out. I reckon Glossop is about as far out of town as we'd want to go. Looking at the previous comments the Western suburbs (Old Trafford, Chorlton, Stretford etc) seem to be the popular places?

It is very different, but we could do with a change and there's much more opportunities for the kids as they grow up in Manchester than there are in rural Devon!
