Family friendly with plenty of countryside/parks close by, and walking distance to train station would be ideal with a circa 1hr or less commute to city centre by Public Transport or bike (not even going to contemplate driving in every day).
Thinking of train lines/times:
Calderdale (Tod/Hebden) 190 would get you alot of house in Todmorden.
Hope Valley / Chinley
Romiley/Disley/Whalley/Chapel etc even Buxton?
Poynton / Macclesfield
Some bits of Bolton might be worth a look.Enjoy the search. V.diff to Devon. Would happily move there!

I moved to Unsworth in the end, which is near Whitefield, both of which are in Bury (borough of) just outside the M60.
Pros:
- quiet, pretty safe area (compared to South Mcr which feels more "urban")
- very quick access on bike to countryside
- cheap
- absolute lack of pretentious London shit
- quick to ride or drive or tram into town
Cons
- Bit boring?
- Overwhelmingly white British (see above)
- Roads are actually not that nice to ride on in my immediate vicitnity and in a belt that kind of stretches from St. Helens to Oldham across north Manchester
- tucked in a little corner where the M60 and M66 cross, so close to motorways
- No real town/village centre. Need to go to Prestwich or Bury for that.
We've not decided where we'll end up long-term. We're here because of my wife's job (see upthread) and her commute is pretty ace now. I like Prestwich because it's just a little bit more exciting and city-like, but it's quite expensive. On the other hand, there are places like Horwich and Ramsbottom that are nice Lancashire towns/villages - a bit like Glossop actually.
So AMA!

Sorry @fizzy.bleach, I'm committing a forum sin by dredging this thread up, but it's exactly what I'm looking for!
Also looking to move North from deepest Devon in the coming months and could do with direction on area. Family friendly with plenty of countryside/parks close by, and walking distance to train station would be ideal with a circa 1hr or less commute to city centre by Public Transport or bike (not even going to contemplate driving in every day). Currently really keen on Glossop but it's a good way out of town and wondering if it might be too far.
Any thoughts of places to look a bit closer that fit the brief? Not made of money either unfortunately so <£190k for a nice 3 bed ideally.
