• a TSR chainring (which is made for 11 or 12 speed) with a 3/32 chain

It's "compatible with", not "specific to": the chainring doesn't care how many gears you're running at the back.

  • Thanks @Scilly.Suffolk

I appreciate that it can be used in theory. My concern was that there might be more noise from the drivetrain and possibly quicker chain wear due to there being some extra width in the chain (maybe up to 2mm). Hence I was asking for practical experience running a 3/32 (9 speed) chain on a 11/12 speed chainring.

Sorry if that was not clear

  • 9 speed chains are the same internal width as 10 and 11 speed. I don't know for certain if 12 is the same, but I guess so.

  • So are Italian bb slightly larger? Reckon I could just use a threadless one? Ta mate

  • Just measured, 70mm it's Italian

  • Urrggh. After picking out the shit alloy threads from a tifosi BB from my BB shell, I ran a proper thread through it off another BB, it tightened up fine to the end. A campag ones arrived today I tried the same by hand thing with and it gets stuck half way. When my campag tool arrives tomorrow would it be okay to use that to tighten it past the sticky patch or should I take it to the LBS which is miles away to get the thread cleaned out again and faced? Campag cups alloy.

  • Getting the threads chased would be a good idea if you've mangled a BB in there previously: a modest inconvenience compared to trashing another BB.

If you're using a cartridge BB you needn't get the shell faced, it's only necessary with separate cups to ensure they're parallel.

  • Cheers I didn't really want to go back, but for a fiver I guess it's money and time well spent if it saves the BB. 2 tifosi's later with threads miles off BSA, glad I got a campagnolo one now.

  • I suppose if you're going there anyway, it wouldn't hurt to get it faced in case you use an external BB in the future: money spent on frame prep is never wasted.

  • Building an old early 90s Specialized Hardrock up with a Sturmey 3 speed hub, have one of the budget Stronglight ST55 chain sets to fit. BB shell is 73mm wide. I first tried a 107mm UN55 BB but the chainring (38t) was touching the chainstay. I have just tried a 113mm UN55 and the chainring now has decent clearance, but the left crank just bottomed out on the left cup when tightened down. I looked for a 115mm UN55 for 73mm shell but can't find one, only 118mm which seems a bit of a jump and anyway not sure if it will actually give any more width on the left. The UN55s have an outer lip on the left cup but some other BB designs don't have this so wondered if e.g. a Tange 73/113mm I have seen for sensible cost might work and if so is it of similar quality? One good thing about the SA 3 speed hub is the wide range of chainlines that can be accommodated....

EDIT: SA chainline range 36-48mm. Chainline of ST55 with 113mm BB 44.5mm

  • Won this at a good price, brief yay until I found sheldon browns page that says ofmega don't use standard tapers, am I scoobied? I always had them pegged as Campag "inspired"

  • All the ofmega cranks I've used were very happy on campag/miche/ISO taper BBs
I also found an Ofmega BB on eBay for £5 a few months ago - they are about!

  • Hi all, I need assistance! I've got a british threaded gazelle track frame and want to fit some old campag square taper cranks - https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/320113/#comment14215947 will this 111mm campy BB do the trick? @dicki @Scilly.Suffolk any ideas?
    Cheers in advance!
    Matt

  • What are the cranks?

  • To get me on the road it's these - Ofmega 'strada' - pista... These but fluted, poor mans campag record pista...

  • Bought a campag cassette and in addition to the lockring it came with a very thin skinny flat washer thats lockring sized, theres no way that goes between the lockring and freewheel body is there, as I thought (new to cassettes) that this was an interference fit with the two knurled areas on top of each other. Would the skinny washer slide on the freehub first, or should I forget it ever existed. Cassette is a 12-21 9 speed. Cheers all : )

  • Perfect mate. That's where I put it. Cheers.

  • I can only reiterate the advice given previously in these threads that choosing "compatible" components only works if your frame is perfectly aligned, with the rear dropouts exactly equidistant from the cenrre line. It is not unusual for a rear triangle to be 4mm off to one side, which is unnoticeable on gears but hopeless for fixed unless you select components to fit the frame's shortcomings.

Steel frames can be re-tracked. With carbon or aluminium I would avoid buying the components until you know how straight the frame is.

The only accurate way to confirm chainline is with a long straight edge.

  • Possibly not the thread for it, but I'll try here first.

I'm having trouble getting a not-very-spinny bearing cartridge out of my GXP BB. I've tried putting a chisel through the other side, resting it on the lip of the cartridge & hammering it on alternating sides to work it out for what felt like forever with no noticeable progress. Are there any better techniques?

  • Ok so I’m looking to try out some longer cranks, and fancy going from 172.5 to 180mm. The frame I’m thinking on running them on however, has tight crank arm clearance even with 172.5mm 5800 cranks, and had to have the chainstay dimpled to get to fit.

Only sram really do cheaper 180 Mm cranks and ive found the dimensions clearance wise for these, but does anybody know where I can find the dimensions for hollow tech cranks?

Equally if this doesn’t work what would be my options for getting more clearance to the chainstay apart from another “tactical dent”? Can I space out a gxp or hollowtech bb?

  • Apologies if this has already been answered (couldn't find it when UTFS'ing) but can anyone confirm the correct BB spindle length for DA 7410 cranks?

I'm reading it's 103mm but that seems odd and I can't find strong enough info on it.

    Cheers

  • seems to be confirmed here .
