And optimism is beginning to overtake pessimism once more. I'm at least going to give it a shot.

The South Downs are nothing but pleasurable.

I'll post a pic of my setup later, for your lolling pleasures.

Cant work in GI whats the teeth?
Did some checking - 32:17? On a loaded bike that's pretty heroic! -
• #982
I think it is 42:21.

2:1 with wheels that are effectively 27": 700s with 41c tyres.

Heroic is not how I would describe my ability or fitness.

I wonder if I can fit a 23t freewheel?

Are you going for a month?
-
• #991
That is not packed for the trip!
But sleeping bag takes up one whole pannier. Thermarest and travel pillow takes up the other.
I would like to get away with just the front panniers if possible. I'll do a proper pack tomorrow.

Do they come in a disc version?

More scare stories, and encouragement from object in Brixton Cycles.
Also, some pressure from home on how much of Sunday I can dedicate to this.
Upshot is that I think it will be an Amberley start rather than Petersfield.
Definitely going to try to get down to two panniers and have them on the back, higher up, unless someone with recent experience can tell me that the deep ruts that Em warned me about are not going to be an issue?
-
• #994
I've no idea about ruts, but 35 miles should be fine. Assume it'll take all day, pack plenty of food and water, you'll be fine. It's a lovely route and area.

I hope your brakes are working now D:

I'm massively up for some SDW action on a future occasion.

Ah mate you'll be fine! Enjoy.
I found this link but looks a bit old. Either way there are water taps on the SDW. Others might advise on drinkability http://www.bikedowns.co.uk/Water%20taps.htm

Yeah. I have a small SDW guide that has taps marked on it.
Final route decision is a bit of a compromise:
Train to Arundel. Ride the river Arun up to Amberley, then along the SDW over to the ring. Back to Amberley in the morning.
It was the best I could figure out with a nice mix of terrain and no chance of being a total slog fest.
Should be fun.
