Which Tyres?

  • It does

  • I currently have a set of veloflex master in 25C mounted on thebike I use the most.
I had zero puncture atm and love the way they feel ; they are quite confortable and I can't fit more than 25 on my fork (tried 28C and does not fit - too bad!). They are starting to be worn so I am looking for other options.

What would be your recommendations for a new set of tires:

    • dimensions 700x25C
    • confortable/rolling feel similar to the veloflex master (if possible)
    • more resistant than them
    • tan wall (optional)

I have seen the continental grand prix classic, or the continental 4 seasons (which is more expensive), the marathons (but I think they roll less and harder to fit), but don't have good knowledge of tire options.

    Thanks for the help!

  • Schwalbe One

  • I've had good experience with Corsa G+ 25s, good endurance and very few flats. I've heard less good things about resistance in the wet but mine rarely get wet.

  • You have answered your own question, another set of Masters, or as Tim said, Schwabe One, look no further. Conti make great tubulars but horrible tyres, feel free to try them and agree with me later.

  • continental grand prix classic... continental 4 seasons... [Schwalbe] marathons

    You're comparing very different tyres.

GP Classic are just shit and 4 Seasons and Marathons, whilst great tyres in their own right, are tractor tyres in comparison to Masters.

The Veloflex are "open tubular" tyres, so made in the same way as a tubular but not sewn up: a race tyre compared to the retro-bollocks of GP Classic and the commuter/touring emphasis of the other two (ie very hard wearing and puncture resistant).

Despite what Colin says, GP4000S II are fantastic tyres with low rolling resistance and certainly more durable than Masters.

Whether they "feel" the same as Masters I couldn't say, but they definitely don't look as nice.

  • another set of Masters

    This.

I’ve not tried Vittoria G Corsa, they seem similar but are twice the price.

You’re unlikely to find ‘same feel, longer usable life’ Veloflex alternatives. Masters feel fantastic because they’re relatively thin and soft. Great with latex tubes.

  • Okay, thanks for the different feedbacks ; looks like another set of masters are the best options. I see that they just launched them in 28 ; considering that the 25 seems quite on the small side, they might fit on my fork, we'll see

  • Stick with the masters. I've just gone back after several years on G+ and feel that masters are much better. Sure they wear pretty fast, but at least they don't get cut to shreads.

  • Use latex inner tubes

  • Any recommendations for
    27x1 1/4 gumwall tyres.
I've found Schwalbe HS159 which look half decent.

  • Do they not still do paselas in that size?

  • All black tubeless 32c, last me through the winter? City riding mostly.

  • Panaracer? I'll search for those

  • Has to be gumwall really due to the age of the bike as modern wouldn't look very good

  • I'm after all black myself, yeah I got some panaracers in gunwall for a 27inch wheel build but it was a fair few years ago. Maybe SJS will still have them?

  • Cool thanks very much

  • What tubes would you use with 700x28c road tyres on 20 mm inner width rim? 18-25c will be fine or should I go for 25-32c?

  • You'll be fine with the 18-25 if it's a quality tube but why would you? Buy Vittoria Lite in 25-32 if weight is a concern.

  • I'm trying to find a good deal in just the same size. Candidates (so far) are Hutchinson sector, Specialized Roubaix, another set of G One speeds or Panaracer Gravelkings. Suggestions welcome

  • I have just switched the Pickenflick to the road bike mode for the upcoming weekend in the mountains, got Hutchinson Fusion 5 Performance 28c (tubetype). Great price as got them on sale for 32 EUR a pair, also very lightweight for this size at just 205 g. I hope they won't catch punctures too easily (there is a proper lightweight version called Galactick, so this should be GP4k-level of protection).

  • What is forum favourite for 700x30 road tyres right now?

    Supple and fast a preference.

  • Might not be the forum favourite but they're certainly mine. G-One Speed's. Unbelievable tyres.

  • Grip in wet? Have read mixed reviews...

  • Asked this in the 'Any question answered...', and have also done some unsuccessful Googling, but what's the feeling around using a tyre bead jack on carbon rims? Seems like a bad idea, but I'd rather not have to spend an hour and a half peeling my thumb nails off if the rims are likely to be designed to withstand the forces this will put into them...
