My K1000 is really heavy. I’m considering getting a Pentax MX instead, as it’s basically the same but smaller, but with some added features. I like them for their simple, easy to use metering system and renowned reliability. I find it very satisfying to use the K1000 and the only reason I’m considering getting rid of it is because of its heft. I have no other complaints with the camera. I currently only have one lens for it, so I’m in no way committed to the brand.
Is there anything else I should be considering? I’ve done lots of reading and generally the same cameras pop up. I have an Olympus Om-10 at home as it was my grandads and I didn’t really like the method of focusing - I don’t know what it’s called. But it looks like this: https://luminous-landscape.com/wp-content/uploads/2003/03/viewfinder.jpg However, I did like the size of it. It is much better for my relatively small hands. Do the other OM cameras use the same focus screen?
Key criteria would be a big, bright viewfinder, fully manual option (mainly for my own learning), an all black version is a plus and a good range of lenses obviously. This makes me think of Nikon. I know the F3 is well renowned, but it’s also known for its tank like build - so that seems like a sideways step.
West Yorkshire cameras have an all black Pentax MX w/ 1.7 50mm lens for £185. Iya the sameness lens that I have on my K1000. It’s very nice. I’d rather buy from a shop with a 3 month warranty over eBay. My budget could probably go to £300 for body only.

What’s the deal with sharpening? Why is no sharpening better? I’ve never ticked the no sharpening box (as you can probably see, I don’t know what it is!)

Could sell you f100 also .. I want one Nikon body but ideally F6

If you have good Pentax lenses you want to hang onto, consider the ME, it's an even smaller version of the MX, The only catch is that it's ae-only.

I'd buy this if it's in good condition.
Also look at the Pentax ME, it's small, but has a huge finder, is a joy to use.
Aperture priority (with manual exposure correction if you like).
Yeah that 50mm 1.7 is superb. -

Haha @Rik_Van_Looy beat me to it!

Careful not to confuse the ME models, only the ME Super has the option for manual shutter selection. The ME and MEF are apeture priority only. I would also say that from experience using the ME Super in manual mode is somewhat fiddly using the small buttons to cycle through the shutter speeds.
As for other Pentax bodies your £300 budget should get you an LX body which is the very top of the range. If you're happy with full manual only then an MX would be my suggestion.

I just remembered that I’d bid on SMC M 2.8 28mm and 3.5 135’s, that I just won... So... guess I’ll be selling the K1000 and buying the MX/ME after all. Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

^^the LX is a little more electrical than I’d like. Hence the MX.

One black MX on its way to me :-) seems like a good price compared to other eBay options. In fact, all West Yorkshire Cameras sales seem to be very good value.

Sharpening, as the name suggests, sharpens the image during scanning of the neg
Most photos benefit from a level of sharpening, however it's generally much better to control the level of sharpening yourself via software like Lightroom. Sometimes you may want a softer feel to a photo, or as you gain more experience with post processing, only apply sharpening selectively. Filmdev also have a reputation of over sharpening which can cause artefacts on the scan.
My past two orders with filmdev I've specified no sharpening - however both times the scans have come back sharpened, with the slightest nudge on the Lightroom sharpening slider just sharpening grain. I'll chase them up about it, but something to be aware of I guess.

Yea, I know, what I meant was
Aperture priority (with manual exposure correction if you like)
..as in: the camera has aperture priority, but there's a +/- 2EV exposure compensation dial and also you can use the ISO dial to manually tweak the exposure if you like.

Yeah, nice.
Did you win the 135 with the neat built-in collapsible hood?
I like that one, it's cute. -

I have a yellow filter and a Hoya 1B that came with my camera when I purchased it. Does anyone have any film specific resources on filter and lens hood usage? I am happy with using the two filterd I have, and I understand the purpose of other colored filters, but have less of an understanding around ND filters and exposure time. Will be trying my hand at some big landscapes in a couple of weeks and don't want to get it too wrong. I don't want to just take a guess on what I should be using and when... Everything I'm finding tends to be for digital...
Very nice. Friend of mine just returned from Malta as well.
Light seems so nice and mellow there..
Makes Kodak colour film happy : ]
