  • My soon to be father in law, upon seeing the collection of woodworking tools I have been amassing last night has offered to give me a soon to be cut down walnut tree in front of his house. (Perhaps his idea of a wedding gift!?)

As a fully fledged city boy who has never seen a saw mill, should I say yes to this most generous offer? Would I be able to get any usable timber out of it? It's ~0.5m diameter at the base so I've been told.

  • Take it!

Have it planked (or DIY with an Alaskan mill), and store it.

While it's drying and seasoning, practice on cheaper wood.

Or get someone to make something from it of or you (a colleague did this with a pear tree).
