  • My soon to be father in law, upon seeing the collection of woodworking tools I have been amassing last night has offered to give me a soon to be cut down walnut tree in front of his house. (Perhaps his idea of a wedding gift!?)

As a fully fledged city boy who has never seen a saw mill, should I say yes to this most generous offer? Would I be able to get any usable timber out of it? It's ~0.5m diameter at the base so I've been told.

  • You could get someone with a portable saw mill to chop it up on site. Unless you want to work it green (not sure if that’s a thing with walnut, more common with oak or larch) you’d then have to store it properly to let it dry out. Roughly a year per inch thickness of board.
