    Let me rephrase; on 'modern' tandems. Surely this configuration is inferiour (all aspects considered), otherwise it would still be widespread today?

    It's a saving in labour, not materials.

    Is it really though? You need to connect the two chains instead of shortening one extra. The time saving in labour seems negligible.

    These days it tends to be recumbent shops who hold bulk chain for sale by the foot.
    A front-crossover is likely to need more than two normal length solo chains, but thanks to e-bikes you can now easily buy chains up to 136 links so you only need two rather the usual annoying 2½
