  • But it's quite unusual right? Never seen it before.

spreading wear over twice as much chain provides longer intervals between replacement

Hopefully at least twice as long, since you need to buy an extra chain with this configuration.

Have you been looking? They have been a thing for at least 80 years 🙂

Exactly twice as long, assuming the chain is exactly twice as long. It's a saving in labour, not materials. The smaller skew angle might give a slight increase in chairing and cassette life, but I doubt that it's noticeable.

  • Tandem buddy! I also acquired one recently. It’s in a bit of a state but managed to ride it home. Yours looks v nice

  • @Tijs
And by posting that Narcisse, I have handily pre-empted any questions you might have about when people started building tandem frames with no diagonal tubes🙂

  • But it's quite unusual right? Never seen it before.

Let me rephrase; on 'modern' tandems. Surely this configuration is inferiour (all aspects considered), otherwise it would still be widespread today?

It's a saving in labour, not materials.

Is it really though? You need to connect the two chains instead of shortening one extra. The time saving in labour seems negligible.

  • Hey, thanks for all the answers :)
The captain have 3 levers, one for the drum brake too.

It needs some work, like changing house cabling, handlebar, brake pads put some oil on the saddles and change the tires. But Follis know how to make bikes so it is really rideable as is. Framed in the 80's for 15000 francs (3800€ now) = 25 months of minimum wage at the time !!
And then after few km, maybe change the rims (the braking surface is concave :/) or the wheels for 9-10s. But it will be heartbreaking to remove this beautiful maxi car hub and drum brake.

Most people have come to that conclusion, I'm not going to argue with them as my drivetrain is neither crossover nor back to front, so I don't have the experience.

  • It's interesting though. @Jaap suggested the stoker might have a freewheel, but apparently that makes the whole thing even more complicated:

    E.g.

  • I think at the time you could buy specific chain for tandem.

  • I think at the time you could buy specific chain for tandem.

Let me guess: at twice the cost of two single chains? ;)

    Great tandem though!

Both riders on a da Vinci have a freewheel. IIRC, there have been designs without the jackshaft which provide only the stoker with independent freewheeling, i.e. if the stoker turns the cranks, the captain's cranks must turn too, but not vice versa

  • I think at the time you could buy specific chain for tandem

These days it tends to be recumbent shops who hold bulk chain for sale by the foot.
A front-crossover is likely to need more than two normal length solo chains, but thanks to e-bikes you can now easily buy chains up to 136 links so you only need two rather the usual annoying 2½

  • Thanks. It's really different to ride with a tandem. I advice anyone to try !

  • Before getting married, you always have to take a little hike in tandem to be on : )

And you're carrying around an extra 300g or whatever and the derailleur suffers from that extra weight through additional wear on springs, pivots jockey wheels etc. no?

They say a tandem is a relationship accelerator right. Can go either way hehe.

  • Steerer cut done 5mm extra uncut til.i get the bearing cap

  • Just run it like that and don’t go anywhere wet or dusty!

  • London weather is confusing sunny in 5mins raining later...

  • Dyno light lever under the stoker's seat? Ooops, wrong page...

  • 5mm extra uncut

Leave it like that and put the spacer on top of the stem when you get the slam cover. In fact, do it now and run the stem directly on the compression ring for now. If you want it to be properly assembled and look pretty, get one of these. Although of course you aren't going to care whether it's pretty if you're selling it, which makes me wonder why you cut the steerer instead of leaving it to the new owner (which now won't be somebody whose fit needs the extra stack) to decide...

  • How about that...

If no one will buy, dismantle is the option wait for few years and sell....

Found a bearing cap online qwerty cycle who stocked cannondale parts etc ive sent them an email lets see if they have for me otherwise wait til.you have it

I hate seeing bike like that looks like giraffe

  • But you weren’t going to keep it and someone else might have needed it. I wouldn’t be able to run it slammed as it’s a size down for me. Might have bought it in the future but probably hold out now for a bigger one

  • Maybe no more because im going to put this
