Me gusta. Now can you fit the silver headset with the new forks so we can compare?
-
• #1254
Too much of a hassle, I'm happy with (;)) the outcome. Maybe I'll fit a short-valve tubes and all black tires ;)

What about us though :-p

Hehe there are community duties to be taken care of ;) However every time I swap headset there’s this dreadful though in the back of my head - what if this time the headtube will crack? I mean, it’s a 70s frame and I’m sure it has been through a fair amount of headsets fitted.
Or have I gone mad?

I found this in my bar tape box...I can't help you

Try not to think about it, unless you're descending at 65kph

Cheers :) yap, it’s my touring bike now. It’s basically done now and I’ll start on a tour to sweden on saturday. In the long run i might splash some cash on metal fenders and a dynamo hub setup. I documented the build in my consolidated cp thread: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/321350/

What's the most anonymous looking quill stem to ahead converter?
Don't do it man.
-
• #1265
still to be invented, I'm afraid.

Anything that doesn't flare out under the area for the stem to clamp; if it goes straight down or narrows, you can put a spacer or two in there, and the transition down to the headset will be smoother.
This setup was pretty ridiculous and hacky, but hopefully gives an idea of what things could look like :https://www.instagram.com/p/BZZCnROHen9/?taken-by=the_._meat
The stem was steel, so an aluminum 1 1/8 one would probably be about the same external diameter.

Wow! That looks terrible.
OK, what's the best matching finishing kit that isn't Nitto

Lol, it's a rat bike. Posted only to show that the outer diameter of yer stack doesn't have to vary crazily as it goes down when using an adaptor. Plenty of better examples out there, just the one I had handy.

Same idea on a nicer bike than my shitty commuter.
-
• #1271
Haha I know, just kidding. Think that could look alright you'd been able to use 1⅛" instead of 1¼"
-
• #1272
It was interesting; with aluminum spacers and a steel stem, the 1 1/4 was exactly the same diameter as the spacers. But with a 1 1/8 aluminum or carbon stem you'd also get a smooth-ish transition, I think.
