    Sharpening, as the name suggests, sharpens the image during scanning of the neg

    Most photos benefit from a level of sharpening, however it's generally much better to control the level of sharpening yourself via software like Lightroom. Sometimes you may want a softer feel to a photo, or as you gain more experience with post processing, only apply sharpening selectively. Filmdev also have a reputation of over sharpening which can cause artefacts on the scan.

    My past two orders with filmdev I've specified no sharpening - however both times the scans have come back sharpened, with the slightest nudge on the Lightroom sharpening slider just sharpening grain. I'll chase them up about it, but something to be aware of I guess.
