  • Must have spent a large amount of my early teenage life painting those miniatures :-/

I remember seeing this overall winner at the Games Workshop Golden Demon Awards in 1988.

    *non-driveside fail

  • Fuck, I actually had that copy - an old hand-me-down from somewhere. You can see how early Games Workshop was this amazing combination of great stuff, personalities and commerce. Later on they forgot to have personality but sold the bejesus out of everything.

  • I think I might have it - a mate gave me a stack of about 60-70 classic WD's from about 84-92 which I've boxed up and have a look at from time to time.

  • Gorkamorka! Yeah I had a lot of fun with that one and really enjoyed the lore.

I remember looking at diorama entries in WD and being amazed at the level of painting, even now I don't quite understand how to get that level of detail

  • Many years ago I read a 40K novel, probably the original one, it was fantastic.

  • Bought the 40K game, barely touched it, never painted anything. It and a bunch of White Dwarf magazines that cost a fucking fortune to get in Australia 20-30 years ago are probably still clogging up space at my parent's place.

  • Actually you just reminded me that I paid something like £50 to get hold of a copy of that original 40K novel in Jan this year. I must've had an 80s flashback or something.

  • The one with a blonde Al Pacino alike on the cover, gunning aliens down?

  • This, I think. It was kinda 'off series' or something which is possibly why I liked the book far more than the game stuff.

  • I've read that, about 20 odd years ago. Its pretty good as its not really subject to the rules that the books are now where everything is Set In Stone and Must Not Be Changed.

  • Yeah, I would've read it in '97 I guess. One of the guys I went to school with loaned me his copy. It was like the Fighting Fantasy stuff but set in the future and way more dark. Loved it back then but so far too scared to read the copy I bought in case it's total shite :)

  • Thinking of fighting fantasy, I bought this on a whim the other month. Found it in a bosrdgames shop and thought “fuck that’s just like the 80s stuff”

  • fighting fantasy

Think I still have my original copy of 'The Forest Of Doom' somewhere.

"There is a fork in the path. To go left, go to page...."

  • We used to go to Games Day at the NIA in Brum. Basically we used to get drunk/high and steal a bunch of shit then go to the Games Workshop in the city and ‘return’ it for cash. Amazingly it worked for about 5 years in a row. I’m not proud of it, but i do miss being a no fucks given kid.

My mates brother had a fine art degree and got a job on the Red Dwarf painting team back in the day. Mad shit.

  • Red Dwarf painting team

  • To go left, go to page....

It wasn't pages but numbered paragraphs. :)

  • Ha *White Dwarf. Too much 6 music maybe

  • We never did wargaming. I think we played a couple of games of Cry Havoc! once, but didn't really enjoy it. We got into fantasy role-playing instead.

I remember buying a couple of things at a Games Workshop in Hammersmith (more specifically, near Ravenscourt Park station) in 1988 and they had quite a lot of stock, loads from other companies (we were into the ICE Middle-earth stuff at the time), but when I returned a few years later all that had vanished and there was only a large table in the room to play Warhammer on and only Games Workshop stuff in stock. It had also become quite a lot harder to catch the staff's attention. They took that to comic extremes in the one in the (now closed or remodelled, I think) shopping centre on Oxford Street.

The one Games Workshop thing I still have is Talisman. Always a good game.

  • Also OP, the thread title could do with some TLC. :)

  • So it was :-)

  • I’ve got Forest of Doom as well.

Decided to buy a copy for a long 13 hour flight last year. Dice roller on the phone - sorted!

  • If someone still has an abundance of Jes Goodwin designed Blood Bowl miniatures, I am willing to buy them.

  • I never lost a fight.

I also tried writing my own Fighting Fantasy book at the age of 12 and tied myself in knots before I ripped it up in a tantrum.

Assumed most people graduated straight on to jazz mags and swapped fantasy world for another.

  • Years ago I said to a fellow FF reader "did you actually use dice then? I just ignored that an automatically won" - received a look of total digust and "OF COURSE I USED DICE THATS THE POINT" in return.

  • Please can we fix the title.
