Imo scooby is going to be the easiest choice. Otherwise you'll be hunting down that rare occurrence of the model that 99.9% of people bought as diesels.
I'd guess the various Volvo X models should have more petrol cars to choose from than VAGs.
Any reason you're not up for an SUV?

Yes not much options when you want petrol and 4wd. Volvo and Subaru are definitely the two main hitters.
Nothing against an SUV, I have the outlander now, which is awful and although is 4wd, would never use it. I grew up with discoveries and land rovers. Land rovers are too painful to drive and discos are just so damn expensive and break all the time. Guess I could look into things like the Land Cruiser, but still don’t get much for your money, and the other half isn’t keen on driving one either.

Awesome!

Does the UK get the 4Runner? Far more reasonably sized than the Land Cruiser. I think they're pretty cool. Kind of ancient body on frame construction but bullet proof. I have a soft spot for them.

Problem with proper body on frame 4x4s is that they drive like trucks, don't handle well on road and have pretty bad safety credentials, even newer ones.

It's ALIVE!
5/8 of the injectors were blocked, I had the wiring for both banks reversed and the dis about 20 degrees out. Fixed that and it fired straight up!
Will time it when get my mate over to keep an eye on the oil pressure and temp, then it's time for a shake down.
Holy shite that was a fucking epic.

Modifying cars for performance? Like pedaling in to a piss storm. OEM all the way for me from this day hence.
Or two wheels only.
Or both.
:)

That actually sounds like the 1 in 100 sitch where an SUV would be suitable.
Good news Jung! We need pics.

Nope, we don't get the 4 Runner, we get rubbish like the Rav4...

Volvo XC90 T6?

Anyway, a Subaru outback fills the brief. Safe, decent on road and driven carefully, quite capable on rutted tracks. Plenty of space too

Epic, fucking saga.
Congrats, can you use fuel stabiliser to stop the fuel going gummy?
-
• #44018
Jap import so more goodies on them.
-
• #44019
Some will have free wheeling hubs.
Worth going to the dock auctions and see what has arrived or look for stuff in japan (interporn) and do deal to get the vehicle here?

Quit it, you have added the correct answer, maybe add a carlton with the fergusson forward 4x4 as mentioned on this thread.
Nissan Pathfinder? Nissan Patrol?

Love my outback, had it 5 years and it's been rock solid. 2.5 petrol, 170bhp, 5 speed manual with low range.
Winter tyres make it the most capable snow car I've ever driven, only hampered by lack of ground clearance!

Re
Wasn't a fan of that series Legacy when they came out, but have grown on me. Also they have really dropped in value, something subaru's used to not do, think that disastrous boxer diesel did them a lot of damage (2008-11 I think all have broken crankshafts by now, 12> they revised it, but not many folk trust them since!).
If I wanted a 'town and country' wagon, the flat 6 with an auto and a giant roof box would be on the cards, haven't seen a recent 'outback' version though, again have folk stopped buying them?
Volvo XC70 (latest gen) I don't mind, inside is very not like a volvo, feels like a fancy mondeo but not in a bad way if that makes sense? Its the 60 series 'volvo' thats actually a mondeo isn't it?
Recently running round in a 1.4 petrol mk5 golf, dog slow, likes to roll around onto its door handles, but so comfy, forgot that normal hatchbacks with huge profile tyres (15" wheels) can just blast through potholes without worry. Also uses a large amount of fuel for its pathetic performance, but comfy and works...

One of the rear calipers on my Mk1 Octavia VRS is seized. If I buy this to replace it with, how fiery and explosive will my death be?
Only problem is that it's not green, but I reckon I can put up with that compared to £80 for a painted OEM ebay one or £200 for the proper Skoda UK one, as long as it's not a terrible idea?

It's a relief so far to say the least! Stay tuned for the next catastrophe....

Speaking from a position of relative ignorance I'd be weary of changing just one caliper on a car with a potentially different one.
If they are exactly the same caliper and it's only a colour difference then the only problem I can see is if the other rear isn't working at its fullest.
(assuming the pads are similar wear). So I'd check and service that one at the same time.
Sounds like 3 hours well invested if you can plough/grade both drives.
