Wasn't a fan of that series Legacy when they came out, but have grown on me. Also they have really dropped in value, something subaru's used to not do, think that disastrous boxer diesel did them a lot of damage (2008-11 I think all have broken crankshafts by now, 12> they revised it, but not many folk trust them since!).
If I wanted a 'town and country' wagon, the flat 6 with an auto and a giant roof box would be on the cards, haven't seen a recent 'outback' version though, again have folk stopped buying them?
Volvo XC70 (latest gen) I don't mind, inside is very not like a volvo, feels like a fancy mondeo but not in a bad way if that makes sense? Its the 60 series 'volvo' thats actually a mondeo isn't it?
Recently running round in a 1.4 petrol mk5 golf, dog slow, likes to roll around onto its door handles, but so comfy, forgot that normal hatchbacks with huge profile tyres (15" wheels) can just blast through potholes without worry. Also uses a large amount of fuel for its pathetic performance, but comfy and works...
Anyway, a Subaru outback fills the brief. Safe, decent on road and driven carefully, quite capable on rutted tracks. Plenty of space too
