Love my outback, had it 5 years and it's been rock solid. 2.5 petrol, 170bhp, 5 speed manual with low range.
Winter tyres make it the most capable snow car I've ever driven, only hampered by lack of ground clearance!

Anyway, a Subaru outback fills the brief. Safe, decent on road and driven carefully, quite capable on rutted tracks. Plenty of space too
