What could be better than a road trip through Lancashire and the asbestos got rid of?
Two life goals achieved at once.

Sounds amazing:
I'd recommend the Haslingden one, up at the top of this hill

Any lawyers/ legally minded people on here? I have a question about flat freeholder and leaseholder contract agreements regarding ‘service charge’.

Yeah, that might be an issue... also would have to tow with the tractor, top speed recorded at 13mph...

Check the council waste centres near you, some in (outer) London take wrapped up asbestos too.

An interesting perspective (and for the comments too)
Earlier this summer, Zoopla, the property website, kindly provided a list of eight questions that first-time buyers should ask themselves.
These were practically useful, but lacked breadth. Here’s an alternative list:
- Do you believe it is possible to make huge capital gains on an investment without assuming risk?
- Including yourself, which of the counter-parties involved in this transaction do you trust, and why?
- Relative to the house location, how far and low is the sea?
- To what extent would you describe your aspiration for home ownership as religious?
- Will the internet eventually destroy the current distribution of land values?
- Will the legal and political institutions that prevent your asset being violently requisitioned survive the next decade?
- Is the land in your country worth more than the land in most other countries, and if so, why?
- What is a house?
- Do you believe it is possible to make huge capital gains on an investment without assuming risk?

I liked this one
Two married 30 year old solicitors buy a house in London from a single bus driver who bought it 30 years ago, with their parents gifting £100k for the deposit. Who is buying the houses that solicitors purchased in London 30 years ago?

Corporate lawyers, bankers, hedge fund managers, etc.

Actually it’s footballers
They buy the detached suburban houses, demolish them then build something taste forgot up to the boundaries.

I'd still like to move to somewhere that has a large garden and (at a minimum) a double garage.
The Mrs won't countenance moving out of London.
Where can I look that a mere mortal could afford that meets these criteria?

You keep asking, the answer is Croydon
-

I'd like a different answer to Croydon, and therefore hope to get one by plaintively re-posing the same question.
That said, Croydon isn't London, I'd suggest.

Leyton/Walthstow - still plenty of bargains to be had IMO... in the right area...

Budget?
Now that's a question.
It would appear that a mortgage for an 800k place would be circa 2k/month, which would strike me as something of a line in the sand, payment wise. HSBC would appear to be happy to lend me rather more than that, but I'm having a few issues with paying 2k a month so lets leave it there.

Chingford, it’s got a forest on the edge of town and not all the pubs are shit.
These have been good to me.
