Maybe I find the idea culture can be owned difficult.
-
• #53605
Again, not really saying that. Nothing wrong with sharing, imitating, mixing, developing culture between people, it's basically how things work. This is different because some twat is exploiting something specific, getting it wrong and trying to make money out of it.

Isn't this just what marketing is?
Mexican stuff for Doritos. Brazilian carnival themes for Coca-Cola during the world cup. Phil Colin for chocolate bars.
If people of Jamaican origin are genuinely hurt and offended by this then I stand corrected. But otherwise isn't this the very embodiment of what the internet calls sjw and virtue signalling?

Sorry, I’m not trying to be awkward, you said it was stolen, which implied ownership to me.
To me part two of the above is just part of part one. I’d see it as jumping on the bandwagon of jerks success/ popularity. I can’t understand the “damage” caused. -

Obvs if it's just middle class people getting upset over a lack of recipe authenticity - like you would with cream in carbonara then I can totally get behind the outrage.
-
• #53609
don't think anyone's one's hurt or offended, i suspect people might be righteously pissed off at a bloke who makes money from knocking off minority culture whilst also having form for throwing his name behind farage.
aren't people that use terms like sjw & virtue signalling just gammons who are trying to shut down debate?
ok your turn.

Not sure this forum has ever really been a fan of marketing, culture appropriating or otherwise.
Behold something a bit closer to home - the Ragley Marley.

It's like when people make a cup of tea and put the milk in first, but obviously not that bad.

Isn’t that how Indians make chai, boiling milk with tea and spices? But what would they know?

Tilda Swinton is even worse, with her Black Bean, Jerk & Coconut
Taking inspiration from the Caribbean heat, Black Bean, Jerk & Coconut blends black eyed beans and black beans with wholegrain Basmati, creamy coconut, sweet potato, jerk seasoning, garlic and ginger.

i'm not sure what you mean by this.

IME they tend to be US right wing nutters arguing against straw-people. For whatever browsing reason I don't come across angry Brits that often. Probably too much YouTube... on which even habidashery videos decend into Jewish and African American rants.
I just don't see what the controversy is.
Anything rasta colour gets a free pass.
Honestly isn't that much more offensive than jerk rice? Thinking about the context and history of Rastafari culture?
-
• #53621
you might not see the 'controversy' but it's also not appropriate for you or i to dismiss the concerns of people who do take issue with this, especially if those people are from the minority in question. To paraphrase someone on another thread (and this was directed to me as it happens - and in retrospect, they're absolutely right) - If someone from a minority voices a concern, it's not for us to silence them with whataboutery and sophistry, it's our cue to shut the fuck up and listen to what they have to say. We might learn something.
I'm pretty sure telling minorities what they can and can't find problematic is never a strong look.
peace.
