Sweet. Forgive the roadie-noob question, but would that be compatible with a 7 speed set up?

Pretty much all shimano 7/8 speed components are interchangeable. You can mix and match road with mtb. When using 8 speed with 7 speed cassettes you just have to set the limit on the derailleur and you'll end up with one dead click on the shifter.
